The Dominican Republic, a national history

Creator: Frank Moya Pons | 1998-05

The general reader will find in this book an agreeable, clearly written history of the Dominican Republic, while the experienced scholar will find an indispensable reference." -HAHR (Hispanic-American Historical Review)

Publisher: Markus Wiener Pub

About this book
"Frank Moya Pons is the best-known contemporary Dominican historian. The author of many books and articles, he is a recognized scholar both at home and abroad. Moya Pons latest book is based on his well-known Manual de historia dominicana (1992), now in its tenth edition and considered a basic text in Dominican historiography. But his new book is more than a simple translation of the old classic; it is a revised and expanded edition, with new sections, detailed historical maps, and a comprehensive bibliographic essay. The book follows two parallel historical tracks. On the one hand, it is divided into thematic chapters that examine the distinct political periods in the country's history, such as the Spanish, French, Haitian, and U.S. occupations and the several periods of self-rule. On the other hand, it pursues a socioeconomic history by establishing links, when pertinent, between socioeconomic conditions and political developments. Another notable feature of the book is that it examines contemporary events up to 1990. This remains the standard Dominican history textbook, in both English and Spanish. The general reader will find in this book an agreeable, clearly written history of the Dominican Republic, while the experienced scholar will find an indispensable reference." -HAHR (Hispanic-American Historical Review)

The only guidebook to Haiti! And a good one!

The Dominican Republic part is just fine. But you can get that same quality on the DR with Fodor's or Moon. However for the same price this book covers also Haiti. As this is the only guidebook to Haiti there was a danger that it would be done very sloppy - with no competition. However the research is very thorough. Despite what some media want you to believe Haiti is safe for tourists (and also visited by many NGOs). To tell the truth official data shows that Haiti is safer then touristy Jamaica! It's also the best destination to see the old Caribbean as well as for history buffs (the Gingerbread houses, the Citadel). This book covers Port-au-Prince, the urban spawl around it, all of southern Haiti, and most of the North (Goniaves, Cap-Haitien, Fort-Liberte, Tortuga). It doesn't cover some out of the way villages as well as Port-de-Paix, but still, it's very detailed for a Haiti book. Of course a full post earthquake update was done. There is only... 5/5 Mike from Warsaw - See all my reviews This review is from: Lonely Planet Dominican Republic and Haiti (Country Travel Guide) (Paperback) The Dominican Republic part is just fine. Maps are now smaller, book already outdated 4.5 months after publication

I was mostly in Cabarete only, so I shall make only 2 comments:(1) MAPS ARE NOW SMALLER AND LESS DETAILED? Seems to be so in the latest makeover of LP books. Bad idea!(2) ALREADY OUTDATED. I used this in early March 2012, book publication date is stated as Nov 1, 2011. Yet at least two of the recommended eating places in Cabarete was already closed down, and the recommendations were generally off the mark. The new Belgian bakery next to Banco Popular (west of the town centre) is clearly superior to Dick's, yet receives no mention.Prices for bus fares and stuff were also already outdated. Most likely the research was done in say 2010 or 2009, and by the time the book came off the press in late 2011, the information was already outdated.I've come to expect better from LP, so this was below par. 3 stars. 3/5 FredJohnston1981 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great for the traveler; not so great on historical accuracy

First off, Lonely Planet should be commended for taking on Haiti when none of the other travel guides will. That alone is worth a couple of stars. The information about things to see and do, where to stay and eat, contact info, the difficulties and need for patience to get from Point A to Point B, etc... is all very good. This was true in their previous version and is even more helpful and appreciated in this post-earthquake Haiti edition. The one drawback to this book is the disease that afflicts so many of the Lonely Planet books -- their approach to history, culture, religion, the environment, and other issues through a mostly liberal lens. The authors seem bemused that Christians would find Vodou (Voodoo) counter to some of their most basic tenants, and they fall victim to telling just half the story when it comes to history and politics, particularly those parts addressing past U.S. involvement, or Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Let's take Aristide as an example: While the former priest... 4/5 A Northwest Reader (Washington State, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lonely Planet Dominican Republic and Haiti (Country Travel Guide) (Paperback) First off, Lonely Planet should be commended for taking on Haiti when none of the other travel guides will. The insider's guide

Written by two British expats, both long term residents of the Dominican Republic, this guide will unravel such mysteries as the meaning of "manana" and offer explanations of its origins.More than just a ordinary travel guide, this book will give you the needed insights to feel at home in the culture because even if you do speak Spanish, the ways to the native folk can be hard to understand.Written in very readable(if British, which may give US readers some pause but does not detract from the usefulness) prose, and accompanied by first hand experiences as illustrations, this is the ESSENTIAL guide for anyone coming here for more than a week at an all inclusive, or planning to move here.(I have lived here for seven years and use this book as the text for my English class) 5/5 bridgette "ex pat" (Santo Domingo, DR) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Helpful and accurate

We just returned (January 2009) from the Dominican Republic and used the Rough Guide as our principle source of information during our travel. I had hoped that the book would come out before we left. I had the earlier edition but knew some items were out of date. This edition arrived around Christmas and we left on Jan 12 for 10 days in the DR.Read the first 55 pages of the book carefully. Unless you have a lot of time or are a very superficial traveler, you will not be able to see all there is to see as described in the Colour Section. However, the Basics section is accurate and very informative. Even then, there are some corrections. When we left, there was no departure fee (p51) but the sign indicating the fees was still up with the fees blanked out. The cost of a phone from Orange (p54) was around RD$600 not RD$2000. We bought one for our stay and then gave it to a work group from Canada when we left.We drove throughout the eastern half of the DR so I can... 5/5 Oldanalyst (Claypool, IN United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Interesting but...

I actually live in the DR but it wasn't till this year that me and my family started doing a little more exploring, we found the rough guide useful after we had decided where we wanted to go. However, the DR is a country in constant change, so this kind of book quickly falls behind. Some of the tours mentioned (even with phone numbers) were no longer available, the prices have varied too. I found it optimistic in parts (the roads were often much worse) and pessimistic in others (times between places, especially). The hotel descriptions were pretty accurate. So, basically, it was a good starting point, but be prepared to ask a lot of questions everywhere you go. 4/5 carsya - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very Little Useful Information

I know this a "portable guide" to the Dominican Republic, but still it is extremely bare bones and basic. It includes a decent section on Santo Domingo but absolutely nothing on Santiago - the country's second largest city. The rest of this thin volume includes only a couple of short sections on the DR's tourist areas - the North Coast, Punta Cana and Boca Chica. To someone attempting to explore anywhere else in the DR this book is virtually useless. Even for my brief one week trip to Puerto Plata I found nothing in this guide that I had not already discovered on the Internet.I am usually a fan of Frommer's guidebooks. But this one just doesn't cut it. 2/5 Chris Luallen (Nashville, Tennessee) - See all my reviews, June 30, 2007

    Good guide, but ...

The Frommer's Dominican Republic guide is a good guide for anyone making a quick trip to the DR. The book does overexaggerates on the crime issue. Crime in the DR is relatively low, maybe even lower than in the USA. Other than that, the book is excellent. 4/5 SW Highlander (Savannah, GA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Frommer's Portable Dominican Republic (Paperback) I know it's a "portable" edition, but the only part my wife and I found helpful and adequate was the hotel section -- which you need before will be carrying it around anyway. The hotel section in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo were accurate and useful. In Santo Domingo, its walking map of the Zona Colonial was badly off. Points of interest were on different blocks than indicated, the map was not to scale from one block to another (on the same map), and not to scale to the distance guide on the map. In the narrative sections, restaurants and Points of Interest were often not described adequately to find the place without asking people along the way.We tried one of the book's top restaurants and found it laughably lacking: waitstaff that couldn't identify an oyster or cook the tableside flambe, a room that was devoid of any patrons on a Friday night, and old decor from a 1970's era hotel. For nightclubs, it failed to mention that it's number one... This is the best book I have read so far about moving to the DR, it really describes exactely what is goign to happen to you IF you are a gringo (or gringa). I just finished reading your book, what a great book man, I love it! I think if world war III would have broken out I still would not have stopped reading the book until I was finished. I really had to force myself to stop reading because I had to go to the office, or the bed or do something else beside reading. I live in Cabarete but have been to Santo Domingo several times, I love that place, I enjoy it every time I go there.....beside getting pulled over by lookalike "cops" demanding money for running red lights that were not even there.......just exactly like you describe in your book. If you are considering moving to the Dominican Republic, purchasing real estate, retiring or just going on vacation, this book is a must read.I have been considering investing in real estate outside of the United States for a vacation home and eventually retirement and found Ross' book to be not only informative and interesting but best of all, it's a real page turner! The insider's guide

Written by two British expats, both long term residents of the Dominican Republic, this guide will unravel such mysteries as the meaning of "manana" and offer explanations of its origins.More than just a ordinary travel guide, this book will give you the needed insights to feel at home in the culture because even if you do speak Spanish, the ways to the native folk can be hard to understand.Written in very readable(if British, which may give US readers some pause but does not detract from the usefulness) prose, and accompanied by first hand experiences as illustrations, this is the ESSENTIAL guide for anyone coming here for more than a week at an all inclusive, or planning to move here.(I have lived here for seven years and use this book as the text for my English class) 5/5 bridgette "ex pat" (Santo Domingo, DR) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A few mistakes throughout but overall a big help

Our Lonely Planet guide was used every day as we made our way through the Dominican Republic on our honeymoon. Information wasn't always easy to find in the smaller towns (even for a Spanish speaker), so we relied on it a lot. The maps were especially helpful. However, we did occasionally run into small typos or sentences that didn't make sense. While this wasn't too big of a deal, we were more concerned that some sections were inaccurate. When we paid $10 in a taxi to go across Santo Domingo to catch a bus that the LP said went to a certain town, we were extremely irritated to learn that that bus station did not provide transportation to our destination and never had. We had to pay for another taxi to get to the right spot. We also found that the prices listed for hotels and restaurants were much higher than listed in the LP. We were not there in the very low season, but it also was not the highest season. Perhaps the places listed have been "discovered" and the hotels and... 4/5 Shelly Henrikson "Shelly" (Boise, ID) - See all my reviews, September 2, 2009

    SUPER useful book!

I couldn't have traveled to Haiti without this guide! A MUST HAVE! It gives contact numbers of hotels, (almost impossible to find anywhere else) recommendations on where to stay, and also some useful phrases in Creole. Buy this book if you're traveling to Haiti!! 5/5 Chantal Pierre "Mlle Maladroite" (PANA, IL, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Lonely Planet Great like always.

Great book, especially for great initial information about an area. Helped us find a cool hostel and restaurants that we would have missed if we hadn't bought it. 4/5 Edward M. Alonzo "Sir Hair" (Burlington, VT USA) - See all my reviews, September 7, 2009

    Really good quality map

This map is of fairly heavy material which means it will last and it says it is water resistant which is great. I think I will get a lot of use out of it. Lots of interesting information included about places, history, etc. on the map, too. Very satisified with it so far. Haven't used it yet, but I will. 5/5 Noname - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Hunting for Cacao

This is an excellent map. Perfect for exploring the backroads and countryside, but a little too expensive to crumple up in the car. 4/5 Raymond A. Major "Cacador de Cacau" (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews, January 21, 2009
