Switching Power Supplies A-Z

Creator: Sanjaya Maniktala | Technology & Engineering - 2012-04-02

However, eventually, it is undeniable that the input voltage ripple applied to the converter (power) section is rather large, and does affect the converter's design and overall performance (also of its input EMI filter).

Publisher: Newnes

About this book
This book is the most comprehensive study available of the theoretical and practical aspects of controlling and measuring Electromagnetic Interference in switching power supplies, including input filter instability considerations. The new edition is thoroughly revised with six completely new chapters, while the existing EMI chapters are expanded to include many more step-by-step numerical examples and key derivations and EMI mitigation techniques. New topics cover the length and breadth of modern switching power conversion techniques, lucidly explained in simple but thorough terms, now with uniquely detailed "wall-reference charts" providing easy access to even complex topics.Step-by-step and iterative approach for calculating high-frequency losses in forward converter transformers, including Proximity losses based on Dowell's equationsThorough, yet uniquely simple design flow-chart for building DC-DC converters and their magnetic components under typical wide-input supply conditionsStep-by-step, solved examples for stabilizing control loops of all three major topologies, using either transconductance or conventional operational amplifiers, and either current-mode or voltage-mode control

Seems to work well, some minor quibbles

This transformer has worked admirably so far. I used it on a trip to India, and it worked well. It doesn't make any noise while in use, and it seems to stay reasonably cool. Not like I'm drawing all that much wattage through it, but it seems to be just fine.Just a few quibbles:1. The 110-volt North American plug offered on the front of the unit has a spot for a grounding prong, but the unit itself is not grounded. I still cannot fathom the logic of that design choice. Especially in India, where European plugs are *required* to have a grounding prong. You can't get a plug like this one into the outlet without one; the outlets have an internal safety device that only opens when a grounding prong is inserted into the outlet. Sadly, the only way I could get this to work in India was to insert a pen in the grounding prong hole to release the safety and then insert the plug into the power holes.2. The only justification I could find for not... 3/5 William Stein "CJ" (Colorado Springs) - See all my reviews, April 5, 2009

Worked fine and not too bulky

If you are going to Europe and want a step-down converter, this will do the trick. I used on my trip to Spain. It's not as big as others.I used it to charge my camera & iPhone and it worked great. My girlfriend also used it for her hair straightener and that worked fine as well. Other girls on my trip used a simple adapter and ended up frying their straighteners and/or burning their hair.So ladies, make sure you buy a converter and not a simple adapter! :) 4/5 Thomas Bonneau (CA) - See all my reviews, June 27, 2008

    Perfect for Europe!!

Perfect for electronics (I used it for my laptop and my Blackberry)! I left it plugged in for several weeks with no overheating issues. Also, the "pigtail" plug is perfect: Most transformers have the plug attached and can be very heavy and clunky when hanging from a socket. 5/5 David J. Umphrey - See all my reviews, August 5, 2008

Good product, but note that the product description is completely wrong, and is for some other product

This is a voltage converter, not a transformer. It works by chopping the 311V peak/220V RMS input to approximately 110V RMS. It's fine for resistive element cooking appliances. The "Product Description" is for a completely different item. This item does not have a transformer, does not have a power cord, weighs one pound not 26 pounds, and is much smaller than what is listed in the description. It should not be used with anything electronic such as computers or televisions. 5/5 Gator - See all my reviews This review is from: Power Bright TK2000 2,000 Watt 220/240 AC Voltage Converter Travel Kit (Lawn & Patio) This is a voltage converter, not a transformer. Disappointed, Didn t last 20 days

Went from US to Europe, bought this mainly for hair dryer (1600 watts) and straightner (1200 watts)...My straightner burned my hair bcs it overheated to a point i couldn t touch it and melted the outside of it (it was a good and exoensive straightner i had for 2 years, with no problems...)My hair dryer blew up after used with converter for 15 min... A great quality hair dryer...Not enough loosing my equipment, as i pulled it out of the wall the european plug fell of, making it impossible to re use it...Not worth the money, bad quality and it costed me 5 times it s price for my losses.I d return it it it was whole, and not in the trash somewhere in Europe.Basically gave it a star because i could not submit the review without a star... 1/5 From DC - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Have not completely tested this yet. But be aware it will not charge an iphone from the USB port. This is because an Iphone requires 2V on both data lines to make the phone charge as well as the 5V and ground that it provides. (Thats really an Apple problem not Bestek, Apple likes to make it hard for others to make Iphone accessories). Not sure that the USB port will charge a Kindle but it looks as though it does but you get no indication that the Kindle is charging other than the battery level indicator rises. Again I am assuming that the Kindle requires some sort of voltage on the data lines probably different to the Iphone just to make things hard. 3/5 dave - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Life saver!

This has honestly been a life saver while living abroad with US-purchasde electronics. I had the usual smattering of personal electronic devices when moving to the UK (iPod, camera, phone, etc.) and needed something that was more than just a plug converter. As there is a voltage difference here as well, I needed something a little more. This has been a great solution for me. While its a little on the heavy/big side (not something you can throw in a backpack or purse easily), it doesn't overheat and I feel comfortable keeping it plugged in overnight and unattended. The construction is solid and has survived multiple trans-Atlantic trips to and from the UK. I've been pretty hard on the thing, but the cabling has stayed anchored to the devices and doesn't appear to have any fraying or weakness in the connections.A great purchase! 5/5 Cecelia Lee (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews, October 24, 2009

Worked for a heavy duty CHI Flat Iron

I was forced to buy this product by my wife who insisted on using her CHI hair iron on our trip to the UK. It was heavy duty enough to handle converting the voltage appropriately for this device. I'd read about many other products prior to buying this one, and this one withstood the usage. 5/5 Ajay D. Sindwani "Ajay" - See all my reviews, February 6, 2011

    Works well for sewing machine

I bought this transformer about a year ago for my German sewing machine (230 V, 85 W, 50 Hz) to run it in the US (110 V, 60 Hz). So far it works like a charm. I've used it for quite a few sewing projects over the past year and was worried whether the 60 Hz/50 Hz difference would be an issue, but everything seems to be running just fine. Investing twenty bucks in a transformer allowed me to keep using my familiar sewing machine instead of buying and learning how to use a new one, so it was well worth it.Addendum - April 2011: After three years of use now, it still works fine and I haven't had to replace any fuses yet. But you have to be aware of the wattage on the appliances you are plugging into it. I just saw some of the reviews with lower ratings on this item saying it doesn't work, starts smoking, fuses blow immediately etc. Please be aware that this transformer is limited to 200 Watts only, and you probably don't want to max that out either to stay on the safe side... 5/5 A. A bit bulky but does the job fine

I bought a couple of these on moving from London to NYC, and they work fine. My one complaint would be that the clearance below the UK plug socket is not huge, so the cord coming out the bottom of the plug has to bend sharply to avoid the surface the transformer rests on. It's not a big issue though, and we've been using them for a couple of months with no problems. Don't throw away the replacement fuses that come with it, though; I've already had to replace one of them. 4/5 R. Ennis (London, UK) - See all my reviews, January 8, 2011

Do you really need a converter like this?

Having gone through part of the reviews here, I guess some users might have misunderstood the application of this converter. If you want to use your electronic devices operated with a rechargeable battery (such as your iPhone, cell phone, ipod, ipad, laptop, digital camera) in another country where the household power supply is at 220/240V, you don't need to bother, because nearly all these electronic products are designed today to be completed with a battery charger suitable for a voltage range from 100V to 240V; in other words, people travel around with these electronic items, so these items should work properly at any level of voltage anywhere in the world. Whatever you have and wish to use in a foreign country, just carefully check the marking on the battery charger about the voltage rating ... if the voltage rating is printed or embossed as "100-240V", then don't worry, simply connect the power plug to a socket to charge the battery after you get to the... 1/5 OKY (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Whatever you have and wish to use in a foreign country, just carefully check the marking on the battery charger about the voltage rating ... if the voltage rating is printed or embossed as "100-240V", then don't worry, simply connect the power plug to a socket to charge the battery after you get to the... COMPACT AND LIGHT WEIGHT

A very compact and lightweight converter to carry while travelling overseas. I have used it with my battery, cellphone and camcorder chargers. Also I have used it with my Shaver and toothbrush. I have owned it for two years and have used it on my trips to Europe and Asia. It has a thermal fuse which protects it from overheating. It is very reliable and has never failed on me. 5/5 Jaycee (Il, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Simran 1875 Watts International Travel Voltage Converter For 110V USA Products In 220V/240V Countries. It Works

I've been using this model of travel converter for over 5 years, traveling all over the world. I have only a few 110V US items that I carry with me, the most important to me is an RCR123a battery charger. It has yet to fail me. I use just an adapter (not a converter) for my laptops and other items that have power supplies capable of handling 100-240 Volts at 50 or 60 Hz.I paid $25 for mine, so the shipping charge doesn't seem terribly out of line. I would like to get it for less, of course. 4/5 lazlong (Texas) - See all my reviews This review is from: Simran 1875 Watts International Travel Voltage Converter For 110V USA Products In 220V/240V Countries. Decent Enough Transformer, If Used Cautiously

Be very careful when approaching the load limit (200 watts) of this transformer/converter. After roughly two hours with an 181-watt (1.51 amp) load, one of my transformers overheated, melted, allowed a full 230 volt output surge for several seconds, and then blew the circuit breaker in my house. The unit remained extremely hot for several hours afterwards. In the meantime, I checked the load (which was resilient enough to be undamaged) with a Fluke multimeter to ensure it did not exceed 200 watts. The load remained steady at the level specified. That said, the other two transformers purchased are performing admirably in less demanding, low wattage, applications. I'm temporarily residing overseas. Since it gets tiresome toting around (and expensive buying) larger transformers for every little task, the compact size and low price of this transformer is well appreciated.--------DETERMINING TRANSFORMER REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEVICE YOU INTEND TO USE... 3/5 Fred Anonymous Smith (Huntsville. So far so good

I've only been using this for a couple of weeks now so I can't vouche for long term use but it has been working like a charm. It's been used almost constantly to charge a couple of laptops while I'm abroad and the only problem I've noticed is that it tends to get rather warm, which is not unexpected. I try to let it cool off every now and then for a few minutes to a 1/2 an hour and then plug it back in.I hope this helps. 4/5 J. very nice

I took a few of these to Italy with me because the one I bought last year (different brand) blew a fuse and was unusable. I wanted backups! I did not need them, just one worked great and I have more for other uses now. I used this for my laptop computer and digital camera and both worked swimmingly well. 5/5 MnM (Olalla, WA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) BEWARE

I brought this item for a trip to the UK I needed to recharge my camcorder battery 1st there are no instruction and is a very small switch on the rear. It switches the voltage step up to 220v or step down to 110v it is not marked unless you have a magnafing glass. I plugged it in via a UK adapter not only did it burn out the adapter it took out my Battery charger and knocked out the power to 5 rooms in the hotel were I was stayingLets just say I was not a happy camper and due to the fact I was in Europe it cost me well over $100.00 to replace the items to recharge my camcorder!!! 1/5 S. Not clear instructions and USED product

The product works well provided you manage to understand the instructions, they are very confusing. This converter is a voltage divider when working from 220V to 110V, or voltage doubler when working from 110V to 220V. So if you are living in the us and want to plug a 220V device, the best case scenario is that you set the converter up (with a switch) as a doubler and no problem, OR, you set it up as a divider and you device doesn't run because you get half a 110V instead of 220V. BUT, if you are in south america and want to plug a 110V device and you set the converter as doubler, YOU might destroy your equipment.Worst thing in my case? the product was USED (scratches and partially removed painted labels) when I actually paid for a NEW product. I wouldn't recommend the seller and the crappy instruction manual. Nothing bad to say about the product itself. 1/5 M. Huertas (USA) - See all my reviews, July 27, 2009

Works as advertised and clever design

First off, this is NOT a voltage converter so if you have 110V appliances, make sure the power plugs for those are universal (i.e., accept 110-240V) before using them with this overseas. Also, the pics on Amazon sort of make it seem like you get three adapters, but they are really just different modes of the same adapter -you only get one adapter.I like that this adapter is compact and lightweight and it comes in a small cloth carrying case. This was important to me because I didn't want anything too bulky or heavy. And unlike other adapters you don't have to carry around all these other plug extensions (i.e., one for each plug type). You can flip a switch on either side and either a UK, Europe, Asia, or US plug will surface. You can then flip or press the other plugs back into the device so that only one plug type is sticking out (just like in the pictures). I used this in Europe with no problems - as you can see, the Europe plug juts out more than the other modes... 5/5 ken in the city - See all my reviews, September 8, 2008

Clever design but poor quality manufacturing

I purchased five of this item to use while overseas. The design idea is brilliant. One adapter plugs into anything and allows anything to plug into it. Flip a switch on one end and out pops a two prong standard American 110 plug; manually lift a two prong European style 220 plug, or flip a switch on the other end, and out pop three plugs for a UK designed 220 volt outlet. The front also receives all three style plugs. The problem is, one of the three UK plugs, the ground, is plastic (so there is no ground) and it swivels so it does not hold the unit tightly to the wall outlet. All three plugs seem slightly smaller than the standard size. I had to tape mine to the wall to keep it plugged in in every outlet I have tried. Mind you, I said I bought five. All five have the same design, all five have the same flaw. None will stay plugged into the wall using the UK plug after you plug something else into the front of the adapter. The price is ridiculously low for a product of this... 2/5 Kevin Lockett "Chappy" (Auburn, AL USA) - See all my reviews, January 22, 2009

    Doesn't fit most European plugs

I can't claim to have personally tried every single outlet in Europe, but I can tell you that the majority of European plugs are recessed: that is, the actual socket into which the plug prongs go is set into a little round hole about half an inch deep. This adapter does not fit into that recess, and is therefore useless. I found this out the hard way in both Holland and the Czech Republic, and great was the wailing and lamentation on both occasions. You can use this with an extender built for the purpose (see the Simran Plug Adapter on this site for an example), but if you're doing that, why not just get an adapter that fits in the first place? 1/5 Thomas Polley - See all my reviews, July 15, 2009
