Continental Philosophy, A Very Short Introduction

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
In this enlightening new Very Short Introduction, Simon Critchley shows us that Continental philosophy encompasses a distinct set of philosophical traditions and practices, with a compelling range of problems all too often ignored by the analytic tradition. He discusses the ideas and approaches of philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Habermas, Foucault, and Derrida. He also introduces key concepts such as existentialism, nihilism, and phenomonology, by explaining their place in the Continental tradition. The perfect guide for anyone interested in the great philosophers, this volume explains in lucid, straightforward language the split between Continental and Anglo-American philosophy and the importance of acknowledging Continental philosophy.

Continental philosophy, a contemporary introduction

Creator: Andrew Cutrofello | Philosophy - 2005-09-29

Publisher: Psychology Press

About this book
Continental Philosophy: A Contemporary Introduction surveys the main trends of European philosophy from Kant to the present. It is clearly written and accessible to students. In a novel approach, Andrew Cutrofello looks at continental philosophy through the lens of four questions that derive from Kant:-How is truth disclosed aesthetically?-To what does the feeling of respect attest?-Must we despair, or may we still hope?-What is the meaning of philosophical humanism?Cutrofello shows how these questions have been taken up by (1) phenomenologists, (2) continental ethicists, (3) hermeneuticians and critical theorists, and (4) existentialists and their critics. In the introduction and conclusion, he explains how the questions raised by continental philosophers differ from their analogues in the analytic tradition. With its frequent references to Shakespeare, Cutrofello's style is lively and engaging. His remarkably comprehensive book will be of interest not only to students but to anyone seeking a reliable overview of the continental tradition.

    Love it...

I commute about 27 miles a day. I need tires that can take the broken glass and road crud in stride without flatting. I used to use Armadillo's but they were so heavy and slick in the rain. Then I used Gatorskins, which I loved...until my supplier ran out of stock for quite some time. Once my Gatorskins wore out I thought I'd save some bucks and buy some less expensive tires. Result... flat... flat... flat... flat. Ended up replacing tubes on a weekly basis. So... I sprung for this more expensive tire. It is just as good as the Gatorskin used to be. Once I put it on, I've not flatted again. Rides really smooth too. It is also relatively light and the black tire is really sticky and holds the road in the rain. I have confidence, not only that the tire won't flat on my way to work, but that even in rainy conditions, I won't be sliding on grates or road paint. Finally, a nice touch... they've included a small depression in the tire that helps you know when it is time to... 5/5 CD (Japan) - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Grand Prix 4000 S (700c) (Sports) I commute about 27 miles a day. Roadscrape

I did a good bit of research and narrowed my choice down to the Conti 4000 S and Vittoria Open Corsa Evo. I found a great deal on pair of Contis for much less than the Vits, so ordered the 4000 S in 700x23. I'm fairly sure the 4000 S and 4000 in black are the same tire with different graphics - but the 4000 in colors do not have the same material compound.Over 3,000 miles on this set and still amazed by them (rotated when rear started to square). My other bikes have wider tires (28 and 30) yet the Conti GP 4000 S in 23 mm rides more smoothly (I'm 178 lb., run it at 100 psi - note that maximum pressure on bike tires means max. for 220 lb. total weight - vary the psi according to your weight+bike weight). The 4000 S has amazing ride quality and durability on chip/seal and old broken pavement as well as new blacktop. I've hit fresh gravel (sharp edged stuff indeed), plenty of road holes, patches of broken glass, small pieces of sheet metal and who knows what else -... 5/5 J. Great tires

I live in Colorado and we have lots of goatheads around here. I wanted some tires that held up fairly well to punctures but didn't feel like I was running steel belts while pedaling uphill. I have been using these tires for roughly 3 seasons and am very happy with them. I noticed at first that I was still flatting with them but when I am diligent about keeping the pressure up (I run them at 115), they perform much better.I can generally get ~7,000 miles per tire unless I roll over a hazard and get a slice (it's only happened once). 5/5 Craig E. Nearly bullet-proof, roll great, and stick like glue. Awesome tires.

I ride fixed in an urban environment and was infuriated with constantly having to deal with small pin-hole flats. I eventually had to start carrying around a flat-repair kit in my bag (patches, tube, levers, mini-pump), which definitely helped in terms of not getting stranded, but it was still a hassle having to take 10-15 minutes out in public fixing a flat or two a week, plus the weight of all the extra kit. After doing some research on puncture-resistant tires and asking around town I finally decided on the Gatorskins and I have to say I love 'em. The day after I put them on I had to do some riding around town and after all the snow we've had recently the roads have been in less than stellar condition. In addition to the ubiquitous threat of broken glass, I also was dealing with tons of gravel, pot-holes, and left over road-salt, conditions where, with my old tires I'd have flatted out no question. The Gatorskins took these conditions like a champ and provided better... 5/5 N. Olsen - See all my reviews, March 2, 2010

    Pricey but worth it

I've been commuting for years and have thousands of miles on my bike. I've been through about every tire out there and have settled on the Gator Skin as my number one choice.I ride on city streets with lots of debris. I've never yet flatted with the Gator Skins. Also, they are pretty light weight for having such good protection from flats. Finally, they grip very well in rainy conditions. OK, they are rather pricey but they are the only tires I buy now. 5/5 CD (Japan) - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Gatorskin Wire Bead Road Bike Tire (Misc.) Great commuting tire until it failed.

I love and hate this tire. The love is because it's grippy even on wet roads. It has not allowed many flats. I had a few last season of commuting but I'm attributing it to crumby tubes. My current dislike is cheap Chinese tubes. The seams seem to fail after a mere 500 miles or so. The tread on this tire is very nice. I'm running 700x28 which keep my 220+lbs of commuting bike/gear/me from pinch flats on the railroad tracks and bridge joints. The hate is that the sidewall failed without notice. As in with other tires, it's the tread that wears out and then you can see that's time for a new tire. Or the sidewall fibers start to break and you can see it's getting brittle. This tire exhibited none of those warning signs. From my photos you can see how much tread is left. What happened on this tires last ride is that I had a car start to pull out into the street in front of me and I hit the brakes in a panic stop from 25mph+. (I had the right of way, but there is no... 3/5 G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews, May 15, 2010

A fun and poignant story about "true" love

I've always remembered this movie from when I was a kid and saw it on cable TV. Having seen it again, I think what really makes this film such a sweet and wonderful thing is how the main characters (played by John Belushi and Blair Brown) stay true to themselves as individuals even while falling in love. Without giving too much away here, it's very refreshing to have a romance film in which "love" has as much to do with mutual respect and deep caring for another human being as it does with good ol' reliable movie-screen passion. Ernie Souchak (Belushi) and Nell Porter (Brown) have what is considered a far-from-perfect predicament in the game of love, but the way in which they find a solution together makes for one of the sweetest love stories I've ever seen in a movie.Of course, there's no way to watch this film without feeling the sadness and lament over Belushi's too-soon death at age 33. And yet, I think it's really remarkable to see Belushi "the actor" overcome some of... 5/5 Anthony E. Pomes - See all my reviews, March 22, 2007

Sweet Romance From The Early '80's

CONTINENTAL DIVIDE is a sweet, predictable romantic comedy of two opposites who in classic movie fashion can't stand each other at first but then fall madly in love. Although this is a comedy there is also lots of drama and John Belushi's portrayal of Ernie, an intelligent Chicago investigative reporter, is far from his role as ANIMAL HOUSE'S Bluto or most of his other characters in SNL sketches. Ernie needs to get out of town for awhile because his investigating has angered some powerful and corrupt politicians. His editor suggests he hide out in Wyoming and get an interview with Nell, a woman who has been studying bald eagles at her remote mountain top home. Ernie with his chubbiness and chain smoking is a typical fish out of water in this rugged terrain. He ends up staying at the cabin of the beautiful self-reliant eagle expert Nell played by Blair Brown who is at first immune to Ernie's charms. It will come as no surprise to frequent viewers of romantic comedies that after a... 4/5 Susan K. Schoonover "Sue Yingling" (Boulder, CO) - See all my reviews, February 16, 2008

    One Tough Tire

I ride around 3,000 miles per year on some pretty rough roads. I've had a set of these on my bike long enough to completely wear the tread off the tires and have only had one flat that I can remember. Traded them for a very nice set of tires from a different manufacturer for the summer season and had 4 flats in one month. I put my old Continental Grand Prix 4 Season tires back on, and will run them until the new ones I've ordered arrive. If my new set performs as well as my old one does, I will continue to run these tires as long as they are available. I highly recommend these tires! 5/5 PurplePiano88 (Arkansas) - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Grand Prix 4 Season Road Tire (Misc.) Great tires

Bought these to replace the stock Bontrager race lite tires (aka: lead weights) on my Trek 520. They roll beautifully and are very supple; you can feel the pavement underneath you. I've always run Conti's GP's on my bikes but I really like these tires. I also weighed them when I got them and they were around 270 grams a piece, so they are light too. I won't run any other tire but I do run them a little under max pressure because I feel they ride better and I randonneur so the comfort over the long haul is important to me. 5/5 James Briscoe (PDX, OR) - See all my reviews, November 16, 2010

Great traction, low rolling resistance, but most importantly - NO FLATS!!!

I also needed to get rid of the cumbersome stock Bontragers that came with my Trek so I purchased Michelin Krylion tires because they were supposed to be durable. I started to flat every week so I did some research and decided to try the Continental 4 Season tires.Well, 500+ miles after installing the Contis I've been flat-free (fingers crossed). These miles included riding though chipped and tarred streets, potholes, debris, glass, etc. - not bike-riding friendly streets for the most part. These tires are low weight but have a high tpi count giving them exceptional "grippyness" and low rolling resistance. I love the feel and will be purchasing them for my next set (hopefully not any time soon). 5/5 Carpe Diem (PA, US) - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Grand Prix 4 Season Road Tire (Misc.) Great looking, Fast, Fantastic Tires Overall

For the money these are some of the best road tires you can buy. I typically ride on Continental GP Attack & GP Force tires as they are the fastest tire on the market but still provide a very soft ride. These tires are every bit as soft at the same high pressure but are a tad bit slower, understandable for the money difference. Even though they have a higher rolling resistance they are still very fast and most people wouldn't even notice the difference. I've rode on many different brands of tires including high end Italian tires and these two Conti's or the Michelin Pro3 Race kick but on all of the others for road type riding. I like these more than the GP 4000's which my local bike store live by but I find these every bit as good even though they have a lesser TPI. I have several hundred miles and haven't suffered a punctured tire yet and I've road through some real junk too. 5/5 Steve Mason - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Poor Puncture Resistance

I commute 150+ miles a week and have been using these tires for a few months - a few months too long. Although these tires are relatively soft and light providing a good feel and roll on the road, they also have a built in tractor beam for debris. The soft tread picks up sharp objects which then progress through the tire during use. The lack of casing to the tire provides little resistance to punctures. What started as a small cut from a chard of glass, ended up as a gaping hole that allowed the tube to bubble out and deflate instantly. Averaging 1-2 punctures a week is not acceptable, so it's in the recycling bin for these. If your a weekend warrior and want a good feeling cheap tire - these are a good choice. If you on the road a lot and want a reliable tire - I do not recommend these tires. 2/5 CaliKiwi - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Ultra Sport Bicycle Tire (Misc.) Ernie Souchak (Belushi) and Nell Porter (Brown) have what is considered a far-from-perfect predicament in the game of love, but the way in which they find a solution together makes for one of the sweetest love stories I've ever seen in a movie.Of course, there's no way to watch this film without feeling the sadness and lament over Belushi's too-soon death at age 33.

Fantastic book by two brilliant authors!

What can you say about a book that burrows into your brain and ties you up in knots? This one did it for me. I've read several books by these two fantastic authors and I know each of their styles. Half the fun I had was trying to figure out who wrote which scenes by their style. I couldn't do it. The book blends beautifully from start to finish. It is a mystery that kept me guessing all the way to the end. I was more than pleased with the drama, the action, Remy's stubborn streak and growly style of love making as well as Jamie's sweet nature. Sometimes I wanted to bash Remy's head against the wall and scream "Wake up, you ass!" The sex scenes were steamy and amazing and I found myself going back to re read them again and again. Whew! Talk about hot flashes. I very highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a fast paced, surprizing book, filled with hot sex and seriously depraved evil bad guys. You will love it! 5/5 Patricia Logan "Patricia Logan" (Southern California) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great new series - two hot detectives

Yet another young boy in Phoenix is missing, and Detective Remington is hot. Not just because of the weather, but six boys, barely in their teens, are gone without a trace. While he struggles to put the pieces together, he can't help but feel all these cases are somehow related. Young boys, troubled homes, sudden disappearances.Meanwhile, in London, Inspector Jamie Mainwaring is coming to much the same conclusion. Six missing boys. All from unhappy home situations. All missing. No clues. So he goes digging, looking for similarities. What he finds triggers involvement at much higher levels of government. So it's no surprise when Remy finds himself on a plane to England. But what IS a surprise is the attraction he feels immediately for Jamie. But, he can't - no, won't - act on it. He's there for a job, not to make friends or find a trick. So he puts on his best Cowboy attitude and snipes and snarks at the man.Doesn't work, and the... 5/5 Tom W "Tom" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Divide (Separate Ways) (Kindle Edition) Yet another young boy in Phoenix is missing, and Detective Remington is hot. 3.5 stars

Continental Divide is a suspenseful read detailing international kidnapping cases. Detective Remington first notices a pattern of young boys being abducted in Phoenix, while his counterpart in London, Inspector Jamie Mainwaring notices the same. A secret Interpol task force is started and the two men begin working together to unravel the mystery. However, tension and wariness between Remington and Jamie might derail that. What I liked about Continental Divide is the gritty realism of the case. Human sex trafficking exists and the determination of the two protagonists to stop it, at any costs, is very gripping. Another good thing about the book is the UST between Jamie and Remington. That was off the charts. However, there were a few things I thought needed some work. While the chemistry between Jamie and Remington was super hot, their continuous fighting and general mistrust of each other grew tiring and felt forced. Second, the bad guys were over-the-top... 3/5 Lasha (Planet Earth) - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Divide (Separate Ways) (Kindle Edition) Continental Divide is a suspenseful read detailing international kidnapping cases. Conti's Attack and Force

Continental GP Attack and Force TireI am not into racing anymore but the features of this tire is as important as if I were. Rolling resistance, I'm very sensitive to it. When cold weather comes along a lot of tires harden up and this old fellow can tell it right off. Yes these tires are more expensive and I can tell you right now you won't be sorry you spent the money. These roll as easy as some very thin skins I run in summer when trail is blown clean once a week. This Black Chile compound they use is fantastic. To you fellows that are into racing I would have a set of these Conti attack/force for training and on race day put on a pair of Cont's GP Supersonic Black Chile's. The Supersonecs are only good for mybe a little over 400 miles, depends on how hard you pull them. It's your power that grinds off the rubber, they're just for race day and you must win! Conti's don't harden up when it gets cold, win on cold or hot days with Conti's The old riding on Journeyman... 5/5 Ernie Wireman (Mt. Vernon, Oh. Worth the Money!

Tires matter. I have learned this the hard way. Cycling is just a lot more fun if you have good tires. After 20+ years of being cheap and buying whatever road-tire was on sale, I accidentally tried a pair of Continentals. Yes, they were on sale -- otherwise I never would have tried them. Like I said, I'm cheap. That first pair of Continentals were amazing, and I've never bought another brand of tire since. Tires are now about the only thing on my bike that I pay full price for -- they're worth the money. For 10 years, I have used Gatorskins on my commuter bike and my tandem, and I've never had a flat from any ordinary puncture. I ran over a NAIL once (yes -- a 3 inch long nail), and of course I got a flat, but other than that, no glass, no thorns, nothing has penetrated the Gatorskins. And of course there are the Grand Prix Attack and Force tires I use religiously on my road bike. I have been married to these tires for 10 years, and I'm still... 5/5 swren1967 - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Grand Prix Attack/Force Road Tire Set (Misc.) Tires matter. Great tires - great durability, puncture resistance and weight

These tires came stock on my Litespeed titanium road bike with Ultegra/DuraAce components. I was concerned that they would be too race-oriented, quick wearing and susceptible to flats given my diverse riding profile. After 3,000 miles of combined training, recreational rides, centuries and road commuting (18 miles to/from work) over 2 years, I am really impressed. In that time, I recorded only one flat, despite the fact that my commute took me over two sets of railroad tracks each way. While I know that the low flat count is probably at least somewhat attributable to luck, I have to give the tires some of the credit. Finally - I'm concerned with durability, but I also want to ensure that I have the lightest set of tires possible on my bike without compromising safety or reliability. Thus far, the Conti Attack/Force combo has done the trick at 300g/pair. The tires are still on the bike and I am purchasing a second set for my new Mavic Ksyrium summer wheels. 5/5 unhookt - See all my reviews This review is from: Continental Grand Prix Attack/Force Road Tire Set (Misc.)
