More Changes for the American Express Platinum Card

  • Sep 21, 2010 from dlb1752(David Banther) in *
dlb1752 I received notice in the mail yesterday from American Express about more changes to the travel benefits for the Platinum Card. You will recall they recently added the US Airways Club as a participating lounge, giving Platinum & Centurion members complimentary access. The notice I received yesterday appears to involve the relationship with Continental Airlines and American Express. I suspect this might have to do with the recently approved merger of Continental Airlines and United Airlines.
What is Being Removed [effective 9/30/2011]:

Continental Airlines Presidents Club lounge access.
Continental OnePass Point Transfer (meaning you cant transfer your Membership Reward points to your OnePass account).

What is Being Added [effective 12/1/2010]:

$200 Airlines Fee Credit. Platinum Card members will now get an annual $200 credit towards miscellaneous airlines fees [seat selection, baggage fee, ticket change fee] on a qualifying airline of your choice.
20% Travel Bonus. If you use your Membership Rewards Points to pay for all or part of your travel, Platinum Card members will get 20% of those points back each time.
American Express Travel App. An application for mobile devices that will be able to keep track of your itineraries, provide flight alerts, lounge locator, airport guides, and more.

Are these changes a good or bad thing? Well, I think that depends if you fly Continental Airlines often or not. However, I believe a lot of this is out of American Express hands. They have to work with the airlines to offer these benefits, and the merger with United Airlines might have caused some issues. I dont fly Continental Airlines simply due to my geographical location, Tampa Bay, FL (the south is largely serviced by Delta & US Airways), so what is being removed is of no consequence to me and I think the additions are great! What do you think?

Newark: The $100 Million Facebook-Newark Schools Deal Went Down in an Airport Lounge

  • Sep 27, 2010 from jaunted in Lifestyle
jaunted If you watched Oprah late last week or picked up a newspaper, you may have noticed the news that Mark Zuckerberg, founder and current head of Facebook, has made the decision to give some $100 million dollars to the Newark, NJ public school system. It's not just a straight gift however, but a "challenge grant," requiring the Newark school system to match it by seeking another $100 million in donations. Zuckerberg has no history of such philanthropy, so this is a huge deal, and it's a huge deal that was sealed in an airport lounge at Newark International Airport. If you're ever passing through the Continental Airlines President's Club at EWR, glance towards their private conference, because the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports that a 3-hour-long meeting here made it happen:
