About this book
The legend of lost Atlantis turns to fact as Shirley Andrews synthesizes a wealth of information from more than one hundred classical and Atlantean scholars, scientists, and psychics to describe the country and its inhabitants. Review the scientific and geological evidence for an Atlantic continent, which refutes the popular notion that Atlantis was located in the Mediterranean. Follow the history of Atlantis from its beginnings to its destruction, and see a portrait of Atlantean society: its religion, architecture, art, medicine, and life style. Explore shamanism, the power of crystals, ancient techniques for health and healing, pyramid energy, ley lines, the influence of extraterrestrials and the origin of the occult sciences. Learn what happened to the survivors of Atlantis, where they migrated, and how the survivors and their descendants made their mark on cultures the world over.

Atlantis, the legend of a lost city

Creator: Christina Balit, Plato | Body, Mind & Spirit - 2000-05-01

Recounts the legend of the lost civilization of Atlantis. Includes a note discussing various explanations for the legend.

Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)

About this book
A magnificently illustrated retelling of the story of Atlantis--one of the world's most haunting and fascinating myths. Floating on the emerald sea is a small rocky island belonging to the mighty sea-god Poseidon. Few visit its shores-until Poseidon marries a beautiful woman named Cleito and transforms the island into a rich and fertile paradise, where all things flourish. A magnificent city arises. Poseidon names his perfect island Atlantis. Atlantis prospers and its people live in peace, but as the years pass, Poseidon's descendants start to act less like gods and more like men. When the people incur the wrath of their god, a terrible curse is carried out and the entire island sinks forever beneath the waves. This retelling of the history of fabled Atlantis is based on Plato's Timaeus and Critias. It features a note by internationally known historian Geoffrey Ashe, who has written extensively in the area of mythology.

    AWESOME!

I saw ATLANTIS last night, accompanied by my 65 year-old mother, and we both had a great time. No, it's no LION KING or BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, but it's not meant to be either; it's meant to be something different for Disney, and it is. The action scenes are amazing, sometimes evoking for me images from the STAR WARS movies. The dialogue is often sharp, fast and hilarious (maybe a little too fast to follow for younger kids), and lots of our fellow adult audience members were laughing out loud. The voice talent is, as always with Disney, fantastic; Michael J. Fox does a terrific job as Milo, Leonard Nimoy is perfect as the aged Atlantean king, Cree Summer is proud, intelligent and earnest as Princess Kida, and Milo's fellow adventurers are all equally well done. I didn't find the storyline at all difficult to follow, and while the concept of the giant crystal that keeps Atlantis alive is a bit "new-age", I don't think kids will have a problem with it. It's sci-fi, it's... 5/5 JM Yoda (Nebraska, United States) - See all my reviews I saw ATLANTIS last night, accompanied by my 65 year-old mother, and we both had a great time. Stunning Vision, Fun and Action, But a Confusing Plot

Overall, this is good fun. It's an exciting film, highly imaginative, and visually spectacular, with a story that moves very quickly albeit thoroughly confusingly. I happily recommend it for family viewing.Compared to recent Disney releases such as , , and all of the other poorly done and profit-driven knockoffs, this film is an original gem. The animation is excellent, the characters are interesting and fun to watch, and the overall story is compelling, as well as very fast-paced. The movie certainly is suitable for kids as young as three or four, despite some of the more esoteric, non-sensical plot twists. We've got... 5/5 Sir Charles Panther "Life is hard. It's hard... Skillfully made, but doesn't quite work (great DVD edition!)

Milo, a mild-mannered linguist, is recruited by a reclusive billionaire to participate on a quest to find the lost continent of Atlantis. Joining him on the trek are a motley assortment of colourful characters, and together they battle subterrainian monsters and eventually find the lost continent. However, not all the characters have noble motivations..... This film was meant to be a departure from the standard song-and-dance musicals that we are used to from Disney; instead, Atlantis offers up a Japanimation vision and an action-packed thrill ride that never quite comes together. The film is visually fantastic, seamlessly blending traditional 2-D hand-drawn main characters with 3-D computer-generated vehicles and landscapes. For any given scene, you can't tell the difference, showing the skill of the animators (and the directors for getting everyone on the same page). In addition, the sound and score are flawless. The author writes this book w/a lot of facts based on verifiable data. It really gives you an in depth look at the history of life on this planet. A history you won't find in any public schools! Excellent Book

This is by far the best book I've read on Atlantis so far, and it was free on my Kindle! Of course after reading it I bought the hard copy because the Kindle copy doesn't have the pictures of the maps in it.To understand how the information on this book came about, you'd have to know what Theosophy was all about. The writer quotes Madame Blavatsky, a woman who had access to the ancient books of our past, along with ancient maps showing the world thousands of years ago. From what little I know about Theosophy, it's a group of intellectual/spiritual people who want to preserve human knowledge, and hone their esoteric skills in order to see into other dimensions. The information this groups comes away with, such as this book, shine with the light of truth, at least for me. I've read countless books on Atlantis, but this book gives details that I've only seen in past-life regression work. Ouch. I should have read the reviews before forking over the dough. I had no choice, really - the kids found it at the grocery store check-out. The kids liked it - they didn't notice that the animation was no better than 1960's Hanna-Barberra cartoons and that the story was 3 stories awkwardly stitched together. If you liked the moral theme of Atlantis, don't ruin it with this dumbed-down cartoony follow-up. The orignal Atlantis was a visually stunning masterpiece of animation almost in the league of The Lion King and Fantasia. This DVD is not nearly worthy of the Disney name ... 2/5 C. Three Tales Tied Loosely Together

Considering that this "movie" is actually a combination of three stories originally produced for an "Atlantis" cartoon that never came to fruition, I find it to be unfair to judge these adventures as one whole. Instead, I'll give a brief review of each of the three adventures and then summarize the entire movie.First off, we have Milo, Kida and the gang tackling the mighty Kraken. No, it isn't the Kraken you may remember from "Clash Of The Titans," but a sea-dwelling demon who wreaks havoc in the seas and possesses a small village. The story is probably the best of the three. It is quickly paced and has pretty good development. The second story is rather boring. It takes place in the American Southwest. A band of "dust coyote spirits" have attacked one of the locals who happens to have found some ancient pottery. Milo's team has to figure out why the "coyotes" are attacking the locals and put a stop to them. The ending of the tale is rather brilliant,... 3/5 K. Fontenot "Prairie Cajun Regenerated!" Whoever wrote this movie should quit the film industry!

I don't expect much from Disney's straight-to-video sequels, but this one has simply got to be the worst of them all. First off, this film has absolutely NOTHING to do with the city of Atlantis. Instead, it focuses on three separate and unrelated "mysteries" that have an eerie resemblance to episodes of Scooby Doo. All the characters return and Kida decides to see what it's like on the surface. She's supposed to go and help, but all she does is dally around being stupid. Her involvement has nothing to do with the movie until the end. This movie is only a mere 80-minutes, but after the first 45, I was ready for this film to end. Bottom line, it's hard to believe that the writers at Disney Television can lack the imagination and creativity to make a movie that's even a little bit worthwhile. I seriously could've come up with a better story....one that's about Atlantis! CIA agent Foreman meets with former Green Beret Eric Dane and apparent agent Sin Fen to discuss the Shadows. No one knows much about these invaders that try to enter the earth's surface through scattered gates such as those found in the Bermuda Triangle, Cambodia's Angkor, and Japan's Devil Sea. And this book, Atlantis - Bermuda Triangle - has a great storyline. Here's the problem - it is unbelievable how many spelling errors there are in the Kindle version of this novel. I'm not exaggerating when I say that you can hardly get through 3 pages on-screen without finding one. Now, I'm no professional proofreader (maybe I should be), but that many errors is inexcusable. It completely disrupts the flow of the book, your brain having to decipher what in the world you just read. And twice, believe it or not, the book had the wrong character talking! In a conversation between Dane and Sin Fen, all of a sudden Ariana was speaking, even though she wasn't in the "scene." Then it reverted back to Sin Fen. It's NOT what everyone thinks it is....

This series has had kind of a rough time here on the review boards. While I can understand why some have been disappointed and mostly agree with those who endorsed it I am still left with the feeling that everyone has rather missed the meaning and the meat of the story...IT'S ABOUT WAR. It's about why we fight, how we do it, what it takes to keep on fighting and, in the end... that war across time, distance (both geographically and spiritually) and culture links us all in the greater struggle of trying to determine whether what we are fighting for is as meaningful, or is even for the reasons, that we think. From the Vikings and the Druids, to the Romans, Custer's Last Stand and the bloody fields of Gettysburg... the human condition seems to play itself out, for good or ill, on the battlefields we engage on. Granted, this plays out via a story that traces a group of people fighting an "ultimate" battle of sorts against a great foe of this planet whose attacks on humans spans a... 4/5 Janine M. When is the widescreen DVD coming?

I would love to see this film either on widescreen DVD or at a revival house screening somewhere. Anybody who knows this movie is probably familiar with its production background: George Pal wanted to make a larger scale movie about Atlantis but MGM didn't give him the budget he needed; leftover footage from "Quo Vadis" was used in the final scenes when Atlantis is destroyed; Anthony Hall (actually singer Sal Ponti) and Joyce Taylor apparently weren't strong enough actors to avoid being somewhat upstaged by Edward Platt and John Dall, whose campy arrogance as the corrupt warlord is a pleasure to behold; and finally, scenes of flying soldiers were not included in the final film when they tested poorly in test screenings. Still, this film holds some real treasures: Paul Frees' somber narration before the titles, the powerful Atlantis theme by Russell Garcia, the amazing fish-shaped submarine, that fantastic crystal death-ray weapon, and most of all, the striking depiction of an... 5/5 M. Saturday matinee delight.

A Greek fisherman named Demetrios rescues a shipwrecked princess. He helps her return home and finds himself a slave in the advanced civilization of Atlantis. Due to arrogant corruption and moral laxity, the country is an abomination before heaven. Unexpected religious overtones enter the story. Impending doom hangs heavy in the air. The birds and animals flee the approaching destruction. Eventually, the earth moves, thunder crashes, and the volcano rocks-n-rolls. Others complain that this is an inferior effort from director George Pal. Comparisons aside, this is a good fantasy adventure story. The MGM production values are above average for this type of film. The animal men are demonic in their transition from human to animal. Demetrios's ordeal of fire and water is exciting. Take a basic sci-fi plot of a lost civilization, add "The Island of Dr. Moreau," mix with "Spartacus," splice in some costume spectacle, enhance with crisp color photography and you have this movie... 4/5 Robert S. Atlantis the Lost Continent

I remember as a kid seeing "Atlantis the Lost Continent" along with "Giant of Marathon" with Steve Reeves in May 1961 at the Eastown Theatre in Detroit. Two handsome leading men (Reeves and Anthony Hall) save their kingdoms from doom and gloom and win the love of a beautiful lady in the process."Atlantis" has been panned by critics over the years yet I loved this film as a 12 year old in 1961. It was science fiction at it's best with colorful costumes, ogres, wolf men, mad scientists, beautiful maidens and villains. How about the submarine shaped like a fish!!Anthony Hall as the greek fisherman could have used a little weight training from Mr biceps - Steve Reeves - as he appears a little too thin for a hero. The staged scene of Demetrious on a boat with his maiden (Joyce Taylor - by the way what ever happened to her?) passing through the pillars of Hercules is hopelessly silly with fake water sounds and fog along with horned owls hooting! Best part of the movie... 4/5 MIKE DIGEORGIO (sterling hts, michigan) - See all my reviews This review is from: Atlantis, the Lost Continent [VHS] (VHS Tape) I remember as a kid seeing "Atlantis the Lost Continent" along with "Giant of Marathon" with Steve Reeves in May 1961 at the Eastown Theatre in Detroit. Two handsome leading men (Reeves and Anthony Hall) save their kingdoms from doom and gloom and win the love of a beautiful lady in the process."Atlantis" has been panned by critics over the years yet I loved this film as a 12 year old in 1961. For conspiracy enthusiasists

However, Forman worries that the enemy now possesses nuclear missile capability as the USS Wyoming vanished in the Bermuda Triangle gate. The Shadows send nuclear missiles that strike the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where two tectonic plates lie. Apparently, the Shadows plan to cause pandemic destruction to a degree that the planet has not felt since the collapse of Atlantis in 10,000 BC. Dane and Fen must find the long lost "shield" that will protect the planet if humanity is to survive an enemy that wants to end mankind's reign.ATLANTIS: BERMUDA TRIANGLE is an exciting military science fiction work that will please fans of non-stop action thrillers. Good storyline, Unbeeleevibul umounnt ov speling errurz.

I've always loved Doherty's books. The second had a recently-dead captain speaking (about himself, I might add), then reverted back to the one that the reader KNEW to be alive and in the current conversation. I mean, c'mon, proofreaders...seriously... 3/5 Derek Hall - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It's NOT what everyone thinks it is....

Unfortunately, the story and characters don't quite live up to... 3/5 Craig MACKINNON (Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews This review is from: Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2-Disc Collector's Edition) (DVD) Milo, a mild-mannered linguist, is recruited by a reclusive billionaire to participate on a quest to find the lost continent of Atlantis. An excellent thriller with a beautiful twist ...

This is an excellent book by Greg Donegan. I picked it up simply because it presented an interesting twist to the age-old "Atlantis" and "Bermuda Triangle" mysteries. The author weaves an intricate web of adventure and mayhem entangled with very believable sci-fi. From start to finish there is an incredible pace to the book. The main plot is very intriguing and it is really hard to put the book down. Simply because of the unique nature of the plot and the good finish it is a MUST READ! The only thing that begs a question is, "When is the sequel coming out?" 4/5 Navdeep "Andy" Ranawat(navdeepr@hot... Spectacular and thought-provoking at the same time!

Is there an alien connection with the lost city of Atlantis? How does the ancient city in Cambodia of Angkor Kel fit in? This exciting novel penned by the author of many names(Bob Mayer aka Greg Donegan here!) is the start of a new series and attempts to answer these questions, among many more about the world's mysteries. In the story, which begins with aircraft disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle in 1945 and then a strange alien encounter with a special forces unit despatched to Angkor Kel to recover a crashed reconnaissance aircraft occurs during the Vietnam war. Move forward to the present. Another plane, a privately-owned geological survey jet, crashes in the same spot. As communications are blacked out by strange signals, a special forces unit led by Eric Dane, survivor of the Vietnam encounter is sent there by the President. Not only that, signals are being bounced off satellites all round the globe which arer believed to be too advanced for human technology... 5/5 Mr N Forbes-warren "author of RESURGENCE and ... Last third is junk

Ok, appears a lot of people are fans of the author(s) and series. I'm a newbie, and this will be my last. First 2/3 of the book was a good 3.5 stars, despite the fact that the author could never really present a good tangible description of the 'others'. Then wow, the last bit of the book was fractured, disjointed, called for something beyond a suspension of disbelief, and it almost seemed like it was in a hurry to end itself. Very disappointing. 2/5 a8 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: ATLANTIS (Kindle Edition) Ok, appears a lot of people are fans of the author(s) and series.
