    Fascinating but sad, too

I really enjoyed this book, because the author's personal experience brought a great deal of authenticity to the story. On the other hand, it was really disturbing to learn just how seriously cruise line employees are exploited and even mistreated. I absolutely love to cruise, and I don't think I will ever feel the same about it after reading this book. I knew that crew members work 12 to 14 hour days for up to 8 months without a real day off, but it was truly eye-opening to learn about the horrendous conditions endured by those who live below the public decks. Things like windowless rooms, continuous vibration from engines and thrusters, bleak living spaces that sound more like shared closets than rooms, serious overcrowding, and a complete lack of personal space or privacy are the norm in this former Officer's experience. Much of the book is about sexual liaisons, however temporary, and a mind-boggling amount of excessive drinking. It's as if the ship's employees swing... 4/5 Cruisecrazy - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Perfect for anyone entering this industry.

I have just been hired to work for a cruise company and I wanted to find some good reference material and I can say without a doubt that this book makes for the perfect reference for anyone entering the cruise industry or even passengers who are interested in the other side of the spectrum. Herring gives the good with a constant reminder of the bad that comes from working on a cruise ship. He even peppers in the crazy on top of it all! He's not an Officer

First of all let's understand that Mr. Herring is, and always has, presented himself to be much more of an expert than he really is.On passenger ship there are three categories. Officers, staff, and crew.An officer on a ship needs to have a license issued by a recognized national authority in order to hold their position onboard, namely deck officers, engineering and electrical officers, radio officers (a dying breed) and medical officers. Most have attended specialized training, colleges or universities in order to pass the examination requirements to receive their license.Mr. Herring was an IT technician. A staff member. No marine training, no license. And even as the IT Manager, he wouldn't have been considered a "Senior" anything onboard any ship I sailed on.Yes, I too sailed on passengers ships. Twelve years. As a real officer. Five years as Master. For the majority of staff, live onboard is a big party. I LOVE This Book

I read Brian's original book and when I found myself with medical leave on my hands I browsed my Kindle for another good read. I was delighted to see Brian had a second book about the cruise ship world. Not only did I learn about art but I followed Brian's trials and tribulations with glee and outright laughter. My husband kept asking me to read out loud the parts that were making me laugh so much. I would get my smart phone out and Google the paintings and ports of call that were being mentioned. It's as if I was on the ship with Brian. I was fortunate enough to take one cruise with friends years back and they purchased a painting. I wasintrigued by the process then but now I know exactly how that process works. Please also check out Brian's website because the reader can see photographs of many of the people in the book. It just makes a great read even more interesting.I highly recommend this book to those who cruise (and the first book also by the way) and those... 5/5 PJP - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A great followup to Cruise Confidential.

Brian does a great followup to Cruise Confidential. He shows that even though he is moving up in the cruise industry it does not come without trials and tribulations. If you are interested in working on cruise ships or just plain cruising this is a great read. Looking forward to his next book. 5/5 scottz - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Another Great Book By Brian David Bruns

As an avid cruise fan--especially of Carnival cruises, I love Brian David Bruns' books. The look at how the crew lives is very enlightening and a bit depressing. In this book, Brian gives the reader a look at art auctions on cruise ships. I've admired the artwork on board, with absolutely no knowledge about it, but have never been to an art auction. I didn't realize that the ships auction some really good artwork. I learned something valuable by reading this book while being very entertained. Brian's description of art auction school and the life of an on-board auctioneer are eye-opening. All this is done, of course in Brian's witty, sometimes side-splitting way. I'm going on a 14 day cruise in November and will definitely pay more attention to the art. I might even go to an auction. Thanks Brian for a great read and a fun way to gain some knowledge. 5/5 C. A nice idea....just not quite fully there

Let me start by saying that I DID enjoy reading this book. I cruise several times a year, so I read anything I can get my hands on that has to do with cruising. I anxiously awaited this book to arrive and I started reading it immediately. This book definitely had the potential to be extremely engrossing. What made it not engrossing, to the extent I thought it would, is the fact that it is so obviously written by someone who's not a writer. While that could be a plus, in this case it is not. While reading I would find that there were not many transitional areas from one topic to another. There was a lot of jumping around. Quite often the author repeats himself, as well. For example, He writes about something in chapter one, and you'll read that same thing over again in Chapters 3 and 5.Another thing about this book that I found unnecesary, is the addition of the author's bowel habits (in the same waters that we swim in) and his zit popping escapades... 3/5 F. Siller (USA) - See all my reviews, July 4, 2008

    A Disappointment

It's an okay read, but not very detailed compared to another recent cruise book, Cruise Confidential. It is quite short and I would have enjoyed it more if the author had gotten into more detail about life on the cruise ship. Many details were just glossed over and it came over as a long journal entry for a never-ending college party. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. 1/5 Travel Girl - See all my reviews This review is from: Permanent Passenger: My Life on a Cruise Ship (Paperback) It's an okay read, but not very detailed compared to another recent cruise book, Cruise Confidential. Barely Seaworthy

Micha's life at sea, limited to one Carnival vessel (Ecstasy) and less than a year in length, still had potential in terms of an expose, but fell well short of expectations. Disjointed and repetitious, we found flashes of descriptive brilliance ruined by the writer's perceived need to describe bodily functions best left to the imagination. As cruise lovers, we felt a promising "pull" only to be left unfulfilled as Micha fell short of describing life below the waterline. To hear him tell the story, Assistant Cruise Directors have little responsibility and too much spare time--- a stark contrast to life as a Waiter described by Brian David Bruns in his book, CRUISE CONFIDENTIAL. PERMANENT PASSENGER by Micha Berman is "barely seaworthy". 1/5 Greg Fenderson (Sea Cliff, New York United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Just returned from a cruise, this book really helped me out.

I purchased this book a couple of weeks ago for tips on how to save money on my upcoming cruise. Well,I just returned from that cruise on the Crown Princess and am happy to report that the information in this book was suprisingly helpful. I wasn't expecting anything earth shattering when I ordered so it was a pleasant suprise that this guide contained as much information as it did.I decided to go with the low-risk methods instead of any of the extreme methods detailed in the book, since I wanted to play things pretty safe. But, even with being conservative I would estimate I saved roughly 200 dollars off what my bill normally would be (about 25%). I imagine if I really wanted to go all in and use the really involved methods I could probably increase my savings to about 50 or 60 percent. As far as the star rating goes I am going to give a review of 4 stars, but only because there is no option for 4.5 stars. Unique way of saving money

With the way this economy is, everyone is looking for ways to cut expenses and keep more money in their pockets. This book is by Seth Lieber does a great job of helping people who take cruise vacations do just that.Every year I go on a cruise and it seems like every year it gets just a bit more expensive so I am always on the look for ways to cut costs. With air fare constantly increasing and the price of the cruise also going up there aren't many places where you can save money; you either have to stop drinking or skip the casino to stay on budget. In the past I have tried to bring my own alcohol onto the cruise ship and have had success but always had anxiety. My techniques weren't nearly as sophisticated as those mentioned in here. While some of the concepts discussed in "BYOB" are common sense many of them are things that normal people wouldn't even think of. The best part is many of the methods he talks about aren't even against the rules, they just aren't well... 5/5 Wounded Knee Chief "Sam" (Yellowstone, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: B.Y.O.B. - How to Sneak Alcohol Onto a Cruise Ship and other ways of reducing your bar tab (Kindle Edition) With the way this economy is, everyone is looking for ways to cut expenses and keep more money in their pockets. A fun read

I don't drink or cruise so why on earth would I buy and rate this book?First up the book was a limited time freebie and secondly, I love reading about hacks and tricks that other people get up to. The book didn't disappoint in this respect. It's a quick breezy read and you really get a bit of a glimpse of the dedicated cruiser's attempts to circumnavigate the various companies' alcohol policies. I can't judge the tactics myself but they even made me laugh in a couple of places as they are quite ingenious. Two minor points: I'm sure non-US based cruisers would appreciate something similar which is more localised and I really hope the author hasn't used their real name as I suspect their luggage will come in for more detailed scrutiny next time they go cruising. A fun recommended read. 4/5 The Hamster Factor - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
