Black Tickets, Stories

Creator: Jayne Anne Phillips | Fiction - 2011-11-16

These are great American stories that have earned a privileged place in our literature. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Publisher: Vintage

About this book
Jayne Anne Phillips's reputation-making debut collection paved the way for a new generation of writers. Raved about by reviewers and embraced by the likes of Raymond Carver, Frank Conroy, Annie Dillard, and Nadine Gordimer, Black Tickets now stands as a classic. With an uncanny ability to depict the lives of men and women who rarely register in our literature, Phillips writes stories that lay bare their suffering and joy. Here are the abused and the abandoned, the violent and the passive, the impoverished and the disenfranchised who populate the small towns and rural byways of the country. A patron of the arts reserves his fondest feeling for the one man who wants it least. A stripper, the daughter of a witch, escapes from poverty into another kind of violence. A young girl during the Depression is caught between the love of her crazy father and the no less powerful love of her sorrowful mother. These are great American stories that have earned a privileged place in our literature. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mary Margaret Hallinan, former good Catholic girl, is clutching her ticket.Friendship, faith, family, feminism, and1960s counterculture all contribute to the heartfelt, thoughtful pages of Bad Tickets. From the Hardcover edition.

The Devil's Tickets, A Vengeful Wife, a Fatal Hand, and a New American Age

Creator: Gary M. Pomerantz | Games - 2011-07-12

Relates the true story of Myrtle Bennett, who murdered her philandering husband over a game of bridge in 1929, and the dramatic courtroom trial that made Ely Culbertson, who provided color commentary of the proceedings, a card game ...

Publisher: Broadway Books

About this book
Kansas City, 1929: Myrtle and Jack Bennett sit down with another couple for an evening of bridge. As the game intensifies, Myrtle complains that Jack is a “bum bridge player.” For such insubordination, he slaps her hard in front of their stunned guests and announces he is leaving. Moments later, sobbing, with a Colt .32 pistolin hand, Myrtle fires four shots, killing her husband. The Roaring 1920s inspired nationwide fads–flagpole sitting, marathon dancing, swimming-pool endurance floating. But of all the mad games that cheered Americans between the wars, the least likely was contract bridge. As the Barnum of the bridge craze, Ely Culbertson, a tuxedoed boulevardier with a Russian accent, used mystique, brilliance, and a certain madness to transform bridge from a social pastime into a cultural movement that made him rich and famous. In writings, in lectures, and on the radio, he used the Bennett killing to dramatize bridge as the battle of the sexes. Indeed, Myrtle Bennett’s murder trial became a sensation because it brought a beautiful housewife–and hints of her husband’s infidelity–from the bridge table into the national spotlight. James A. Reed, Myrtle’s high-powered lawyer and onetime Democratic presidential candidate, delivered soaring, tear-filled courtroom orations. As Reed waxed on about the sanctity of womanhood, he was secretly conducting an extramarital romance with a feminist trailblazer who lived next door.To the public, bridge symbolized tossing aside the ideals of the Puritans–who referred derisively to playing cards as “the Devil’s tickets”–and embracing the modern age. Ina time when such fearless women as Amelia Earhart, Dorothy Parker, and Marlene Dietrich were exalted for their boldness, Culbertson positioned his game as a challenge to all housebound women. At the bridge table, he insisted, a woman could be her husband’s equal, and more. In the gathering darkness of the Depression, Culbertson leveraged his own ballyhoo and naughty innuendo for all it was worth, maneuvering himself and his brilliant wife, Jo, his favorite bridge partner, into a media spectacle dubbed the Bridge Battle of the Century. Through these larger-than-life characters and the timeless partnership game they played, The Devil’s Tickets captures a uniquely colorful age and a tension in marriage that is eternal. From the Hardcover edition.

    Great price, great product.

This was a last minute purchase for us, as we were leaving in just a few days for the event when we realized we had no tickets for our raffle. These arrived fast, and saved the day. They are high quality, tear easily, and printing is clear and legible. A very good product. 5/5 Terry J. Trainor "Bible Thumper" (West Central Tennessee) - See all my reviews, November 7, 2010

    Harder to tear

I use these tickets in my classroom as reward currency. I bought some tickets at the local store that were great, so I wanted to give these a try. The problem I have is that the tickets are much harder to tear apart than the other tickets I've used. If I don't bend them at the perforation before tearing, sometimes I end up tearing a ticket in half. With the other tickets it was easy to tear them apart. I have to distribute tickets to quite a few kids and bending before tearing is just wasted time when they should have made the perforation better. 3/5 Speed (Southern Louisiana) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) What I wanted but.......

This item was purchased for use at a school fare. The item showed three colours and despite been told that the colours would vary, I never expected all two thousand to be the same colour. Cute Buy

We hosted a party and to keep the bartenders from also having to deal with cash, we had our guests buy these drink tickets from us and simply present them to the bartender for their drink. It was one of our best buys for the party!I like that, "Good for 1 Drink" is written on the ticket. A cute little personalization for the indended purpose. The tickets rip easily apart and are made well enough from what seems to be recycleable material. Which is a good thing since the tickets are discarded right after the party. (Go Green!)The roll is big and we have enough left over for our upcoming Mardi Gras party as well as for future events. I totally totally reccommend this product for its purpose. 5/5 Yvonne (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Coin-Tainer Co. These tickets are an excellent value for organizations who use them for raffles to make money ...

I bought these tickets because our organization is always having a raffle to raise money for community outreach projects and they are perfect for our needs. People are very generous and when we hold 50/50 raffles we need a lot of tickets, especially if our proceeds are heading to the food shelf or to provide holiday meals for those in need. The tickets, all 2,000 of them, are printed on relatively good stock and are double-sided. They're perforated and when I'm selling tickets I don't have to struggle with separating them nor do I have any tearing disasters. I did shop around and at the time I purchased this was the best price I could find. They arrived promptly and hopefully we'll use so many of them raising money for our projects I'll have to order them again. 5/5 D. Fowler "Dragonfly77" (Vermont) - See all my reviews, June 8, 2011

    Best darn raffle tickets ever!

Okay, it seems kind of silly to review raffle tickets - and it is. Nevertheless, my son needed these for a school event on very short notice, and they worked flawlessly. The perforations allow you to easily tear them off, obviating the need for scissors. The informational blanks on the reverse easily allow people with very small handwriting to enter their personal data. The rest of us can just scrawl our names writ large wherever we like. The all-important numbers are printed large enough that virtually anyone under the age of 45 can read them. I recommend these as an excellent solution to all your raffle/admission opportunities. 5/5 T. Codella "Father of Four" (Ashburn, VA) - See all my reviews, January 11, 2009
