Las Vegas, a centennial history

Creator: Eugene P. Moehring, Michael S. Green | History - 2005-03-16

About this book
Since Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905, when the Union Pacific auctioned off land around its new railroad shops, the city has grown from a ramshackle village to a sprawling metropolitan area of well over a million people. Such phenomenal growth was never a sure thing--in its first decades, the town languished as a railroad company town and market center for nearby ranches and mines. The construction of Hoover Dam in the 1930s brought thousands of workers, some of whom decided to stay, and World War II and the Cold War brought others, including military personnel and workers at the Nevada Test Site. But it was when Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931 that Las Vegas met its destiny. This act, combined with the growing popularity of the automobile, cheap land and electricity, and changing national attitudes toward gambling, led to the fantastical casinos and opulent resorts that became the trademark industry of the city and created the ambiance that has made Las Vegas an international icon of pleasure and entertainment. In Las Vegas: A Centennial History Eugene Moehring and Michael Green offer a detailed account of the growth of this unique city, the impact of politics and of wars, and the city's struggle to establish a diversified economy. The authors' scope extends chronologically from the first Paiute people who settled around the artesian springs that gave the city its name, right up to the construction of the latest megaresort, and geographically far beyond the original township to include the several municipalities that make up the metropolitan Las Vegas area. Las Vegas: A Centennial History celebrates the city's unparalleled growth in the brief century of its existence. Italso offers fresh insight into the process of city building in the American West, where urban needs and aspirations must contend with water scarcity, isolation, erratic economics, highly diverse populations, and the rocky relationship between the need for civic order and the Western spirit of independence. Its story will engage residents and visitors alike, as well as all readers interested in the history and workings of an American city.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page.  It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken. Now this cult classic of gonzo journalism is a major motion picture from Universal, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro.

    A Fun Guilty Pleasure

Last year, when this show came on, I dismissed as yet another trendy crime show. I chose not to watch it, but my dad really got into it. Every now and then, I'd see bits and pieces of the show, and for the most part, I liked what I saw, whether it was actual plot, beautiful women, or great panoramic views of Las Vegas. Eventually, I started watching the show, and here is my final conclusion: my first assumption was not far off, but maybe that's not such a bad thing. The series centers around the security team of the fictional Monticeto Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The team is headed by Ed Deline (James Caan), an ex-CIA operative who apparently can make grown men cry using nothing but a fork. Ed's right-hand man is Danny McCoy (Josh Duhamel), a former Marine. And he isn't an actual part of the security team, valet Mike Cannon (James Lesure) often lends a helping hand to investigations due to his engineering degree (even though he could be doing other things, he... 4/5 Andrew "Radaar" (Chicago, IL, USA) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2005

What happens in Vegas sometimes can't be cleared...

NBC's Monday night glitzfest comes to DVD with almost everything intact. As far as the "uncensored" part is concerned, I've only found two scenes that were probably cut for TV. The couple in the elevator in the pilot episode, and the wet-t-shirt contest in "New Orleans" (networks hate nipples, ya' know). The extras are okay, although I saw the "Rumble in the Montecito" AFL promo when NBC ran it during halftime of the Gator Bowl. The Las Vegas history lesson looks too much like things I've seen on other DVDs, like the original Ocean's Eleven, "The Rat Pack's Las Vegas", etc. I like GST's description of "The Night The Lights Went Out in Vegas" as a "bottle show"...just the main cast, no unusual exteriors, the main sets (that aren't fully lit) and a few extras who don't have lines (another cost saver). By the way, for the trivia buffs, the blonde that winks at Danny is Christa Sauls, the computer specialist from "Acapulco H.E.A.T". But, since the big gripe everyone has is... 4/5 Shore DJ (Oceanport, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Las Vegas - Season One Uncut & Uncensored (DVD) NBC's Monday night glitzfest comes to DVD with almost everything intact. Two Reasons Not To Buy This From A Fan

I am a fan of this show and I think the best seasons are 2 and 3. This show is truly a guilty pleasure. However, I have two very good reasons why you should not buy this DVD set or any other Las Vegas season for that matter. I just hope amazon publishes this review.Reason 1: You can watch them free on TNT everyday (weekdays at noon). If you have a DVR, you can record them all in high definition on TNT. This show is syndicated and TNT loops the show over and over. Again, TNT shows every episode from season one to the very last episode of the last season (which by the way is the worst series finale in television history). This leads me to my second reason for not buying any of these DVD sets.....Reason 2: It has no ending or closure. NBC, showing little care for it's fans and the network's audience, pulled this show for financial reasons. When they pulled this show, they decided not to film or air the final episodes which would have closed out the series... 2/5 L. Palumbo - See all my reviews, September 24, 2008

    Useful, fun, readable

Very useful reference with sound advice, fun and breezy writing style with a few laughs. The author clearly loves Vegas. He doesn't overburden you with his opinion on every little thing, which I actually liked. It's more about general guidelines for how to get the most out of your trip rather than you've just got to try this coffee shop. Especially recommended for less experienced Vegas folks who don't know all the ropes 5/5 Steve Reed (Dale City, VA) - See all my reviews, December 6, 2011

Great Series, Bring on Season 3.

Las Vegas is a definite guilty pleasure. It's light, fun, and very entertaining to watch. If you are looking for a deep, serious show - this isn't the one for you. It's pure cheese most of the time and it knows it - never taking itself seriously at all which makes it all the more fun. I loved Season One, liked Season two, and am looking forward to Season Three. Season Two features some great episodes such as the season opener "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" with Danny returing from war and his trauma associated with it, to the hilarious twist in "Tainted Love" where Sam's billionaire husband (Guest Star Dean Cain) comes back to claim his wife shocking Sam and everyone else. The crossover episode with Crossing Jordan "Two Of A Kind" and the season finale "Centennial" are also among the best episodes of the season. I'm pleased with the set

I am one of those people who waits for a network show to arrive on DVD before I get into it. So I am glad the "Las Vegas" Season 2 is here. The second season of the popular NBC series Las Vegas is now available on DVD. Universal is really on a role with releasing television series to DVD shortly after the season ends and prior to the launch of the upcoming season. First we get House Season one and now Las Vegas Season Two.The action continued on Las Vegas during Season 2. When James Lesure and Josh Dumal get together it's like Crocket and Tubbs 2005. The best thing about Las Vegas Season Two is that to my knowledge none of the original music was changed. In the episode "When You Got To Go, You Got To Go," the group Duran Duran guest star. Prior to them appearing on screen the episode opens up with "Hungry Like The Wolf." In the background during the episode you can hear snippets of their songs "Sunrise," and "What Happens Tommorrow." Music is important to Las Vegas so... 5/5 Dorrie Wheeler - See all my reviews, September 19, 2005

    The Best Show on TV!

With the recent cancellation of everything good on NBC, I got addicted to the one good show they have left! Las Vegas has everything a person could want in a show...drama, comedy, an actor that is well-known (James Caan), and some fresh new faces (Josh Duhamel, Nikki Cox, et al.). I bought Season One and watched the whole thing in a matter of a week and now I can't wait until Sept. 13th to get the next season! One thing I do have to say that is bad about this set is the fact that you have to carefully check each DVD as the first copy of the set that I purchased had flaws (glitches) in two of the three two-sided discs (I purchased it from Best Buy, lost my receipt and they wouldn't refund or exchange it...I'm out 50 bucks. I purchased my second set from Amazon and have no problems. Just make sure you keep your receipt until you watch all episodes so you have a way to exchange the set if needed.). Otherwise, this series is much worth the purchase. 5/5 Lauren Garrett (Loves Park, IL) - See all my reviews, August 29, 2005

This DVD is great to watch anytime. It's a serious, yet silly, but very funny television series. The casting director did a fabulous job fitting the characters together, because they work so well as a team, and they look great together. They seem so real, and sincere. This is when it got goofy

In season 3 the new owner is revealed and it's Monica (Lara Flynn Boyle) who's a sexy but mean control freak. Her on the show was some of it's more entertaining points. That is if you ignore her horrible exit from the show. She blows right of the roof and flies right through a shoe store window. Some how the show still had some life left in it after though and it still survived for a year and a half later. If it was gonna get canceled though that was the best time to do it and not by leaving us on the edge of ours seats with a To Be Continued! Anyway, after Monice died tragically stupid, she's replaced as the new owner by Dean Cain who plays Sam's ex-husband. He's some-what annoying and no where near as entertaining as Lara Flynn Boyle was. While it also bugged me that there's no mention of Nessa after awhile. After she leaves to go see her sister along with Delinda in the 2nd season finale, it's left off with someone after her. They never got into what happened next. I love Las Vegas! I like the writing, the acting, the characters, the back stories...it all meshes together for a great show. The show is action packed and easy to watch over and over again. Without giving away any spoilers, I thought the finale was great! I can't wait to see how all of the plots end up. I wonder how it's going to be without a couple of the main characters, but I'm sure the rest of the cast can pull it off. Definitely worth a chance if you haven't seen the show yet. A difficult season, but one that cannot be missed

I really struggled with this season. It certainly was not the same without James Caan (Ed Deline). Indeed, even without Nikki Cox (Mary Connell) and Cheryl Ladd (Jillian Deline) make the show different. But these changes, and the addition of Tom Selleck (AJ Cooper) and Camille Guaty (Piper Nielsen) lend an aura of reality to the show, because people do move on.As the season comes to its abrupt end, and Jillian returns for what ultimately turns out to be the last episode, it really is a reminder of what a great show this was, and how we saw the main cast develop and grow up over the last five years. The most upsetting part though is in the end when the screen goes black and say "To Be Continued", only you know that will never happen because NBC did not respect its fans enough to even let them finish that last episode. Despite this ending that will make you sad, and angry at NBC, you get to look back on the series and realize that this went from some taudry drama when it... 5/5 M. Still funny & dramatic but....

I love the show, I bought all five seasons and I always thought it exceptionally well cast, performed, cut and directed. So I could not wait to see the fifth season, since the fourth ended with such a cliffhanger. Alas, I was rather disappointed to find out that one of my favourite characters had quit. James Caan, who was the soul and key player of it all. Although I must admit that Tom Selleck does a wonderful job, but still, he's no James Caan. I sure don't miss the character of Nikki Cox. However what I think is appalling to all viewers: they leave us with another cliffhanger in this season and THEY AXED THE SHOW?????!!!!! How are we ever going to find out, what happens to Delinda's Baby or all the weddings, does Ed Deline reconcoile with his wife? How did Cooper survive? What will become of the Montecito? Questions and more questions and - alas - no answers. What a shame! 4/5 Marina C. Watteck (St. Poelten, Austria) - See all my reviews, July 27, 2008

    Still good ;-)

I've always loved this series. It's silly yet fun and enjoyable and light too but somehow addictive. I've watched it from the start and find it still good to this day, but different with the cast changes. In this season, we see Tom Selleck join the team as the new owner of the Montecito, AJ Cooper. Danny and Dalinda find out that they're having a baby, and he becomes the President of the Montecito. Piper and Mike wake up one morning finding themselves married (which they keep secret) and when the wedding is out in the open, Mike puts together another wedding for the sake of his mother which prompts Danny to properly propose to Dalinda. It certainly isn't the best season in it's five year run, but it's still good if you are a true fan of the show. I really love episode 12 called I Could Eat A Horse where Danny and Mike are sent to Wyoming to buy a horse for Coopers ranch and also It's Not Easy Being Green where Dalinda is obsessed with becoming environmentally... 4/5 Little Miss Cutey (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews, July 1, 2008

I have listed each chapter to help you see that nothing has been left out.Chapter 1 - The Best of Las Vegas (tells you the best things to see & do, best recreation bets, best casinos, best shopping , best places for after dark.)Chapter 2- Las Vegas in Depth (when to go, history of Vegas and what it is like today.)Chapter 3 - Suggested Las Vegas Itineraries (guys' getaway, girls' getaway, Vegas by air.)Chapter 4 - Where to Stay (a very comprehensive guide to prices, location, and coming attractions.)Chapter 5 - Where to Eat (best restaurants by location, by price, and by type of cuisine.)Chapter 6 - What to See & Do in Las Vegas (top attractions, getting married, and organized toursChapter 7 - Casino Gambling (the games and the best casinos.)Chapter 8 - Shopping (the malls, factory... 5/5 R. Quality book with useful information

I am very impressed with the quality of this Frommer's Las Vegas guide. The entire book is full, glossy color. It has lots of terrific maps, and you can almost picture yourself there. As a frequent traveler to Vegas, I found this book to be very accurate and mostly complete. How could you possibly pack everything there is to do in Vegas into a small book? But this book does a very good job of covering all the main things. The reviews are quite informative, and there are tons of little tips in this book. First time travelers to Vegas will greatly benefit from this book, and frequent visitors will find this a fun read with some new ideas of things to do. 4/5 SirenPrincess (Indiana) - See all my reviews, April 26, 2012

THE ONLY BOOK YOU'LL NEED FOR YOUR VISIT TO LAS VEGAS

I was really impressed with this travel book. After all, I figured how much information could there possibly be on a city that is mostly known for gambling. But I was wrong, this book made me realize that there is much more to Las Vegas than just gambling, and for a non-gambler such as myself, I was pleasantly surprised. Over the years, I have heard from different people that there is much more to do in Las Vegas than just gamble, but I didn't know exactly what until I read this book.Besides the usual chapters on recommended places to stay and restaurants, there are other informative sections. My favorite sections are "The Best of Las Vegas", "Suggested Las Vegas Itineraries", "What to See and Do in Las Vegas", "Las Vegas After Dark", this particular section has information on all kinds of shows that are playing in Las Vegas (some are recommended more than others) including information on the various shows that Cirque Du Soleil offers to help you decide which show you... 5/5 Marie Antoinette - See all my reviews, May 6, 2012

    Slightly dated

Originally aired on The History Channel as a 1 hour program, this DVD felt a bit short at just around 50 minutes of Vegas material. The program starts with a solid presentation of some historical background regarding the rise of early Las Vegas; Hoover Dam, Bugsy Siegal, the Rat Pack, etc. Then the program goes into all the usual Las Vegas things such as Vegas Weddings, neon signs, showgirls, etc. that gives Vegas its identity. There is plenty of commentary from Wayne Newton and some from Debbie Reynolds.Since the program originally aired in the mid-1990's, the material feels a bit dated. The Mirage, Treasure Island, and Luxor are given plenty of attention as the "modern marvels" of Las Vegas; Casinos which were all opened in the first half of the ninties. Not withstanding the fact that you won't find anything about the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, or Paris, this DVD does manage to present the historical aspects of Vegas in a solid and... 3/5 EnergyWork (SGV, CA) - See all my reviews, September 18, 2008

This was the Beginning of the "Modern" Vegas

This early episode of Modern Marvels, circa 1994, almost seems nostalgic now. Jack Perkins narrates this fun documentary at a time when the Mirage, which ushered in the era of the "new" Vegas, was only five years old, and the Luxor and Excalibur represented the "family friendly" Las Vegas. In today's era of all - star chefs, breathlessly hip nightclubs, and upscale and expensive everything, this is like a stroll down memory lane for Vegas regulars, to a great moment when Vegas had cleaned up its image from the seedier 70's and 80's, and a trip there was still one of the best vacation bargains around.By 2000, the corporate monopolies would begin, and in just a few years, so many wonderful resorts would be taken over and blended into a corporate sameness, under the control of non-gaming companies which know nothing about what makes people keep coming back to Vegas. Hint: it's not $200 bottles of wine at every meal and a Cirque Du Soleil show at every resort... 4/5 Michael Kelly - See all my reviews, April 22, 2010

    Places over People

You do learn about the history of Las Vegas. In its defense, I think the "Modern Marvels" series intentionally focuses on the makings of objects and buildings. Still, I felt that this only showed one aspect of this famed town. This work talks about the Flamingo costing $6 million to build and now the town has sites that go up for hundreds of millions. They talk about suites, neon signs, a lack of exits, and the many structures that make the town unique. I was amazed to learn how much Las Vegas views itself as in competition to Disney to the West and Times Square to the East.Still, as a person that finds people more interesting than places, much was missing. They say nothing about the Rat Pack. They say nothing about the percent of foreigners who fuel the tourism. Celine Dion doesn't come up. "Ocean's Twelve," "Showgirls," and Sade's "Turn My Back on You" video don't come up. They don't mention how Homer and Flanders got polygamously married there.
