The airline business

Creator: Rigas Doganis | Transportation - 2006

"In a period of turbulence and uncertainty, The Airline Business analyses the key issues that continue to impact on the stability and structure of the airline industry.

Publisher: Psychology Press

About this book
The airline industry is currently faced with its longest and deepest crisis to date: many airlines are losing hundred of millions of US dollars, several have collapsed entirely and others have been rescued by their governments. This crisis has been precipitated by external shocks such as the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, the invasion of Iraq and the SARS epidemic. In addition, the effect of these events has been exacerbated by dynamic and potentially destabilizing internal developments. Comprehensive and thorough, this revealing book gives a detailed analysis of the crucial events and key developments which have impacted, and will continue to impact on the dynamics of the airline industry. Special attention is paid to: the key challenges faced by the airlines such as continued liberalization and open skies the impacts of global alliancesnew low-cost and no-frills carrierson-line selling and distributionprivatization the impact of disasters. Leading industry authority Rigas Doganis examines the future prospects for the changing airline business and assesses alternative policies which could help the sector adapt to the shifting marketplace. Ideal for students, researchers and professionals in the fields of economics and business, industry and transportation studies, this second edition of his definitive book brings the story right up to date.

    A&E Home Video

This is what 'reality' TV should be.

Very few 'reality' TV shows are very realistic at all; they're staged, scripted and sliced/diced in the editing room to create dramatic stories that probably bear little resemblence to the 'real' events that actually transpired. Not so with "Airline", the pseudo-documentary program on A&E (and now on DVD) that chronicles in 30-minute episodes the various trials and tribulations a handful of Southwest Airlines employees go through while trying to get a sometimes insane public to and from their destinations. The sad part of this, and if you travel frequently you've probably witnessed it yourself so many times, is the fact that so many people in this country are just plain scary in their aggressive ignorance of the world around them, the law and their responsibilities and etiquette associated with travel. Among the most frightening examples:1. The passengers who demand that it is their God-given right to board a plane whether or not they're too drunk to... 5/5 Michael T. Excellent

I had never seen or even heard of this show until I somehow stumbled upon it on Amazon. After readin the above reviews, I decided that I would get it. Boy, what a great investment! Not only do I thoroughly enjoy the show, laughing so often and intrigued when I am not laughing, I am now more inclined to fly Southwest (although I do so already most of the time I do fly). Not only is it entertaining, but it is also knowledgeable in certain aspects. For those looking to go into airline customer service, being a flight attendant, or another career in the airline industry, the jobs are fully explained in the show. My only question: Is there a season 2 coming out? 5/5 Me "kego520" (At home, in California) - See all my reviews This review is from: Airline - The Complete Season 1 (DVD) I had never seen or even heard of this show until I somehow stumbled upon it on Amazon. Love this show!

This is definitely one of the most entertaining shows on TV! Just when you didn't think the world could be any wackier, you enter into the world of Airline. It's cheap, and the only downfall is that it doesn't include the original theme song, but the show is so good, that you look waaay past that. I recommend it to everyone. 5/5 Sabrina "Bri" (NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Airline - The Complete Season 1 (DVD) This is definitely one of the most entertaining shows on TV! Great tubing

Nice tubing. Excellent quality. Reasonable price. Soft and flexible. Just don't put it in too tight a spot since, being soft, it's easy to pinch off. Using more rigid tubing if that's a concern. 5/5 Jon M. Stark "discerning consumer" (Danvers, MA USA) - See all my reviews, June 6, 2011

    Only The Title Is Good

What a disappointment. What a waste of money. The title sounds good, there is the promise of going along in the cockpit of a heavy jet around the world -- but this book is mostly a waste of time. The grammar, the organization, the presentation, the jumping from one unrelated topic to another, the introduction of characters and situations that then are never heard of again are all annoying and distracting. And it all ends with weird TWA 800 missile conspiracy stuff. Er what? This is really just another personal website that would be OK reading for free, but is not deserving of a place on a bookshelf. Keshner never really talks about the actual flying, and while there are some sorta neat stories in the book, and I'd love to hear them at an airport bar, I was left feeling cheated out of my money. I'd pass on this book, and move on to great flying books by Gann, Bach, Drury, Morgan and many more.Read all the reviews, not just the 'best book ever' ones from 'a... 1/5 Dave English (Arizona, USA) - See all my reviews, September 30, 2003

    Cockpit Trash

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. Or make that started to read. I had to throw it in the trash it was so awful. Being a former airline employee, I thought this would be a funny look at airline life. Instead, all the author talks about are the many trysts he encounters along the way. Plus, he uses foul language like there's no tomorrow. I'm also astounded that this book ever got past editing in it's current condition. It is the worst editing job I have ever seen. I would NOT recommend this book to anyone! 1/5 K. Caldo "kcaldo" (, TX United States) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2003

    Overall, a horrible, OFFENSIVE read!!!

My recommendation, stay far away from this book, and certainly don't waste your hard earned money to purchase it. Being somewhat of a commercial aviation buff and possessing a profound respect for the personnel who make up the airlines, I expected to find a book which would reinforce my feelings along that line. Imagine my surprise and horror when among the book's pages I found nothing but the worst kind of smut, harsh language and hardly anything to do with the airline industry at all - the subject matter is vulgar and disappointing for those who were looking for a good aviation read. Toy plane

We recently took our toddler for a trip and we had to get on a plane. For weeks after he talked about flying and going to the airport. He even had questions about the planes themselves. When he asked for an airplane toy, he specifically said that he wanted one that looked just like the plane he flew on. So since we flew AA, I got him this toy. He loved it and plays with it often. My only complaint is that the tip of the wings are a bit sharp. The wings are supposed to be sort of flexible but that is not the case at all. They seem pretty rigid to me. My son is almost 4 so I was not worried about him getting hurt as much but I can see where a mom with a younger child would be. Overall great little toy and it is easy for him to toss into his little backpack and take along with him. 4/5 Workout Momma (NYC) - See all my reviews = Durability:, January 19, 2011

    Love this plane!

Very nice plane, the first of what might become a collection very soon. It feels solid and hefty, not toy-like at all. I wish it had a little stand or something, but that's not a deal-breaker. Like someone else mentioned, the plastic signs (windows) do come off pretty easily, but in my case, this will sit on a shelf so it's not a big deal to me, but I can see how it might be for someone who buys this as a gift for a child. Overall, though, I'm very happy with this item. 4/5 Rick Rivera "Office Poet" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews = Durability:, May 2, 2012

An important, insightful, and readable history of the world's airlines

R.E.G. Davies, retired Curator of Air Transport at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, has spent the better part of the past decade writing this book and preparing its many maps and charts. In a sense it is a sequel to his first volume, A HISTORY OF THE WORLD'S AIRLINES (Oxford, 1964) and builds on that volume to tell the often amazing story of airlines over the past half century. After a summation of the story to about 1960, Davies provides a geographic tour of the world's airlines, melding a narrative of people, changing jet airliners, routes, and regulators, to provide an incisive survey of the services that link communities, countries, and continents. Davies' account draws on an array of source material and his own long career (virtually all the post-war years) researching civil aviation from vantage points in Britain (to 1968) and then the U.S. He has traveled to some 120 nations, and thus offers first-hand knowledge of the countries, companies,... 5/5 Chris Sterling "Castle maven" (Annandale, VA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Airlines of the Jet Age: A History (Hardcover) R.E.G. If you're interested in aviation history, specifically from the advent of the jetliner going forward, this is a book that needs to be on your reading list... I'd almost consider this an encyclopedia of jet aviation in a single volume.Contents:Part 1 - Piston-Engine Prelude: Air Transport Infancy; Airline Adolescence; Wartime Hiatus - And Opportunity; Post-War Recovery; Worldwide ExpansionPart 2 - The First Jet Age: The First Jets and Turboprops; Turboprop Ascendancy; The First Big Jets; The Short-Haul Jets; Proliferation; Emergence of the Middle East; Development of a Second Line; The Commuter Airlines; Restoring the BalancePart 3 - The Second Jet Age: Wide-Bodied Jets; Supersonic... 5/5 Thomas Duff "Duffbert" (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews, September 10, 2011

    An Epic Tome

I had the pleasure of meeting with the author in the 1990s while I was working on a book about African airlines. He was a very interesting gentleman and quite helpful. Davies' book certainly represents a fitting capstone for his career. It is effectively an updated compilation of his regional books in one large volume. His maps remain works of cartographic art. The histories are deep enough to tell you what you want to know. The text actually runs 420 pages with appendices and index of 40 additional pages. The last two chapters are on high speed rail and intermodal connectivity. 5/5 Ben Guttery - See all my reviews This review is from: Airlines of the Jet Age: A History (Hardcover) I had the pleasure of meeting with the author in the 1990s while I was working on a book about African airlines. My four year old son loves to fly on American Airlines, so this was the perfect gift for him. He loves the set and plays with it almost daily. The plane is die-cast and is a great size for his hands. Our only problem with the plane is the stickers started falling the first day, so we had to tape them on which is kind of a pain.
