Ask the Pilot, Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel

Creator: Patrick Smith | Transportation - 2004-06-01

We assume the script is intended to look breezy or energetic, but it seems to have been penned by an Eskimo in the throes of electrocution. Folksy, blurry, ethnically confused. Overall grade: C-minus 10. AirTran Air Tran is the former ...

Publisher: Riverhead Trade (Paperbacks)

About this book
Salon.com's most popular columnist tells why airline travel is still the safest way to get from here to there-and lots of other flight facts. Even frequent fliers, probably don't have a clue how their plane gets from New York to Los Angeles in 5 hours. And many people probably think flying is more dangerous now than ever-even though it's still the safest means of transportation. In Ask the Pilot, Patrick Smith-a commercial airline pilot and author of Salon.com's popular column-explains in frank and very funny language what fears are grounded in reality and which ones are airborne urban myths. He stacks up the facts, anecdotes, and advice to every flying question imaginable: * Just how safe it is to fly? * What is the safest airline? * Do airlines reduce cabin oxygen flow to save fuel and keep passengers docile? * Can turbulence cause a crash? * What's windshear - and can it really rip the wings off a plane? * How does a plane get off the ground? * Why does the plane sometimes bump, jig, and turn at a high angle during climbout? * Has anyone ever survived a water landing by donning a vest or using a raft? * Why are tray tables stowed before landing? Frequent flier or neurotic aerophobe, this is the one book that will wise people up - and calm fliers down.

    Poor- all stickers

The plane is missing detail and is mostly stickers. The stickers peel easy and are crooked on all the planes i have gotten. I am very disappointed and will never buy any of these again. 2/5 kyle - See all my reviews = Durability:, June 19, 2011

nice model but needs to stay on a shelf

My 11 year old son collects airplanes and he wanted this one after taking an Air Tran flight on vacation. It is a decent size and model. After a few months the back wing tips started breaking off. The sticker is coming off the side as well. It is a nice plane if you want to get it and put it on a shelf to display but not as durable if you like to play with it now and again. 1/5 speech gal "emma" (Virginia) - See all my reviews = Durability:, January 5, 2012

    Mixed emotions...

I have mixed feelings about this product. I love its looks. It's moderately well built. The stainless steel finish is somewhat worrisome though (we live just inland on the Oregon coast and I've been unsuccessful finding an outdoor fixture that will last more than 3-4 years here); the finish and the underlying steel seem a bit thin, but time will tell. Shipping is a big problem with this product, and it's not Amazon's or UPS' fault -- the manufacturer's internal packaging is simply inadequate. The wire cage isn't well supported in the box, works loose, and breaks the glass assembly, because the packing design relies on the wire cage remaining in position. I had to return 3 broken fixtures before I finally received the five unbroken ones -- and the Amazon boxes were always in perfect shape. The mounting bolts to which the light assembly attaches were a different length in nearly each box, and all much longer than they needed to be. I had to cut several down. Most electrical... 3/5 D. Very nice stainless steel light.

We just had a porch/patio installed and are trying to keep with a nautical theme. This light filled the bill exactly. We ordered the 12" model. The size is in reference to the height NOT the diameter. It's stainless steel with a glass globe. The glass globe is quite clear with no imperfections. Initially we put a 100 watt bulb in. WHOA NELLIE! That was way too bright. A 60 watt bulb should be sufficient. We replaced an existing porch light so installation was easy. You can have it mounted and throwing light within 30 minutes with common hand tools.Look above for a picture of our light installed. 5/5 Jeff (Sonova Beach, FL) - See all my reviews, September 11, 2009

    Quality lacking

Initially disappointed with the loose packing of each item. It is more delicate than you would expect for an outside light. More importantly, items are being returned because the globe cage rusts within days. 2/5 Kevin - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) gives you all the information you want/need

This little box is very useful. In my case it already paid for itself. I was able to clear some service codes (misfire of a cylinder). In the past I paid $69 for the mechanic to just look up and clear the code.I really like the fact that ScanGauge displays all kinds of engine data in real time. Other devices such as the CarChip save it and then need to be connected to a computer in order to access the data.In my opinion, the ScanGauge is worth every cent. 5/5 Thomas Mueller "tmspecial" (United States) - See all my reviews, August 29, 2005

ECONOMICAL MULTI-FUNCTION FUEL ECONOMY COMPUTER AND CODE SCANNER

I have had the Scan Gauge II in my Toyota Yaris for about 3 months now, and have tested it's functionality in a wide range of city and freeway driving. Since the car is only a year old, I haven't needed to scan any trouble codes yet, so I am using the SGII primarily as a fuel economy computer.SGII connects directly to the OBD-2 diagnostic port that is present on most vehicles sold in the US since 1996. The manufacturer, Linear Logic, publishs a list on the company website showing specifically which makes and models of cars and light trucks that the unit will and will not work in.Features: The SGII reads the data stream from the car's engine control computer, and uses this data to calculate and display, in real time, the engine's fuel consumption, RPM, coolant temperature, throttle loading, and Trip/Tank statistics like how many miles you can go on remaining fuel, and how much $$$ worth of gas has been burned on the current trip. The unit offers something like 40... 5/5 L. G. CHARLOT (California, USA) - See all my reviews, November 18, 2007

    ScanGauge 2 Works As Advertised

I've had the scanGuage II for about 3 weeks at the time of this review. I had bought the unit because I was interested in finding out about how my car, a 2002 Toyota Solara was holding up and what the car computer might tell me.First the cons: 1. The cord is too long. The total run from the ODB II port to where the unit is mounted is about a 15 inches, top. It would have been nice to have sockets on both the plug and the SG II. Include a long and short cord, or just have it so that cat5e network cable could be used. Why? Because storing the excess cable somewhere is a problem, I ended up storing in inside the panel protecting the steering column, and may have created a short in one vehicle lighting circuits. 2. The velcro is too weak to hold the unit in place. I ended up using Radio Shack LockTite fasteners (the clear ones) instead. 3. The manual leaves a lot to be desired, especially the pictures... 4/5 Gregory G. Transglobal Underground isn't the kind of band you're likely to hear on the radio, and that's fine, because if you're tuned in to the local FM station, this probably isn't what you were looking for.The music will probably sound exotic to most US fans, and that's also logical, because Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley weren't the primary inspirations for Transglobal Underground's music. Their sound comes primarily from the Middle East and relies on pounding drums and sparse but hypnotizing string arrangements.I bought Rejoice Rejoice after I saw Transglobal Underground perform in Fall 1998 (they were amazing, and I suggest you see them if you ever get the chance). The album doesn't have the same power they generated on stage, but it's a nice change of pace and still gets time in my CD player. My list of favorite songs on the album is constantly shifting, but "Ali Mullah" and "City of Gold" are both sure bets. Stunning, if you get it.

Speaking as someone who simply cannot get enough of TGU's "Psychic Karaoke," it is a given that "Rejoice, Rejoice" doesn't reach the transcendental heights of that effort--few recordings do. In fact, it wouldn't be hyperbole to suggest that "Psychic Karaoke" is one of the top 1000 recordings of all time. That said, "Rejoice, Rejoice" would have been a 5-star album if it didn't have such a shining act to follow. Earthy, rhythmic tech/trance built upon flowing Middle Eastern undercurrents takes me away to exotic locales that are by turns serene and peaceful, or energetic and uplifting. House music for when the house is the entire globe. 4/5 James P. Reza "jreza" (Las Vegas, NV USA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2001

    Lesser effort from TU

If you heard Transglobal Underground somewhere, or heard OF them, and want to try out their music to see if you like it, my advice to you is this: rush out and get "Psychic Karaoke." Then get "International Times." Both are exciting, exotic, multifaceted and over all thrilling albums that will make you dance, trance, whatever. Two examples of the TU folks at their best."Rejoice, Rejoice" is not such an album. The other reviews here pretty much sum it up: there are a couple of strong tracks, but most of the music is uninspired, sophomoric, even irritating - especially when compared to the towering strength of the aforementioned two releases. You'd have to pry my copies of "Psychic Karaoke" and "International Times" out of my cold, dead hands before I'll give them up. As for "Rejoice, Rejoice"? After a few listens, I sold it on eBay. 2/5 0, November 29, 2000
